A number of indigenous leaders across the Pacific have signed a treaty granting all whales legal personhood in an effort to protect whale populations from the effects of climate change, NPR reported Wednesday.

The numbers of whales hunted by Japan has been decreasing most years, although the nation intends to ramp up its whaling operations.
In 2018, Japan killed 640 whales, compared to 383 in 2021 and 270 in 2022.

It’s like all these new laws mandating electric vehicles because of climate change. Of the top 25 polluting cities in the world, not one is in the US. China and India account for almost half of world pollution yet we continue to pay the price.

To me, this law and most climate change legislation is like posting a no-peeing zone in a public swimming pool. Everyone in the pool needs to play by the same rules or it’s useless.
