Graphic bodycam footage released Tuesday revealed the chaos that unfolded when plainclothes Chicago cops fired nearly 100 gunshots during a traffic stop last month, killing one young man and leaving another injured.
Dexter Reed, 26, was killed during a March 21 traffic stop in Humboldt Park after officers in an unmarked cop car pulled him over for allegedly failing to wear a seatbelt.
The chaotic footage shows Reed rolling down the window of his SUV and then raising it before refusing to exit his vehicle as five officers scream commands and draw their weapons.
Preliminary evidence showed Reed had fired first at one officer during the shootout on West Ferdinand Street. Four other officers returned fire, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said in a statement.
“Available preliminary evidence also confirms that officers returned fire approximately 96 times over a period of 41 seconds, including after Mr. Reed exited his vehicle and fell to the ground,” COPA said.

Would you pull over for an unmarked car? How would you know it’s legitimate? Were the police wearing uniforms? No justification for him shooting but these are questions I have. I would be very suspicious if someone in an unmarked car attempted to pull me over.
Ummmm... Don’t pull a gun on 5 armed cops and shoot at them.
The story is written to make it sound like the cops shot him for a traffic violation when in reality it was because the idiot fired first.
“The magic phrase (with empty hands in plain view):
“Sir! YES, SIR!”
That cooperation has kept me not only out of trouble but more than likely out of jail on several occasions.
“Why are five cops screaming at him to exit for a seat belt?”
BECAUSE he isn’t cooperating.
If he would have (and hadn’t shot at the police) he’d still be alive. 🤷

And the media isn't much better. A couple mentioned that $hitbag fired first, but few if any mentioned he fired ELEVEN times. Firing eleven times at five cops is a very bad life choice and at that point you deserve whatever comes your way.
“Available preliminary evidence also confirms that officers returned fire approximately 96 times over a period of 41 seconds, including after Mr. Reed exited his vehicle and fell to the ground,”
Well at least he exited the vehicle, before exiting this world. One less charge.
I don’t question the shooting, the facts of that are clear, he shot first and they returned fire. I question their claims for the entire stop to begin with and I want to see the entire video not just the part of the shooting. I believe they are lying about why they stopped him and I can’t understand why they would lie unless it’s to protect themselves after the fact. They don’t just have plainclothes officers sitting out there looking for traffic violations, those are anti-gang or anti-drug cops.
“But, if you think they’re going to murder you, you may as well go down in a hail of gunfire!”
I don’t disagree.
“Maybe this dude didn’t want to go to the joint...”
And maybe he didn’t believe they were really the police. I’d have my doubts if they were in street clothes and in an unmarked car.

ALL Sovern citizens who refuse to exit their car should watch this video and rethink their position.
In an area where crime is rampant, traffic stops should be ,made by uniformed officers.
The way these cops were dressed, most of us who carry would have assumed we were being carjacked.
Even if a plainclothes cop is forced to stop someone because of a serous crime, smart cops call for backup by uniformed cops before things get out of control.
The victim was an armed security guard.
The seat belt stop. Unmarked police car, five officers. That sounds like planning and a pretext.
Report that security company had some bad guards, so maybe they were intentionally following and observing the company's guards?
And 96 shots, again, that's overkill no matter how you look at it.
Trigger happy cops committed murder. Charge them, let's see how it plays out.
That Thin Blue Line, protect the cops, even from murder, poor training and execution (pardon the pun)?
Normal weekly gunfire volume for that neighborhood without the cops contributing. I believe.
Oh just stuff it. Whether I agree with seat belt laws or not is irrelevant. It’s the law and not wearing one gives the cops a perfect excuse to pull you over. In this case they got a gang banging piece of trash who was quite righteously blown away.

My thoughts exactly. Totally uncalled for barrage of rounds. Those rounds will not automatically stop at 25 feet if not stopped by an immovable object. The background that surrounds the scene have homes with families that may be in the path of the fired rounds. Cops are lucky that innocents weren't shot. There have been similar shootouts where many innocent people were struck and killed by police bullets.
There is ALWAYS relevant details missing in these accounts that end up causing such social strife.
DO NOT SHOOT AT A COP, EITHER
ARROGANCE
Once a driver shoots a gun at police, I don’t care if the police fire 10 shots or 200 shots, they need to neutralize the threat.
