I didn't want to start a new thread about this, but I thought people on this thread might be interested in my walk across the Manhattan Bridge which extends from my neighborhood in downtown Brooklyn to Chinatown in Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge which goes also from my neighborhood (the entrances to the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges are approximately 3 blocks apart) but was closed. I always cross the footpath of the Brooklyn Bridge for exercise and walk to my job on Wall Street through the Brooklyn Bridge. My neighbor and I decided to try to the Manhattan Bridge. The footpath is very narrow and is comprised by cyclists and pedestrians. It was so crowded with families, couples, joggers, teens etc. Many people had flags. One man had a huge flag draped over himself like a cape. Many of the Hispanic people had flags. One man was walking with a baby in a carriage. Subways also traverse along the Manhattan Bridge and there were subways every 2 minutes or so.
When my friend and I reached the foot of the Manhattan Bridge on Canal Street, there was a State Trooper taking ID. I went up to shake his hand and thank him and then my friend and I walked back to Brooklyn, running into the man with the American flag cape once more.
But the best part of this trip was my discussion with my friend who is, alas, a Democrat. She asked me why America didn't retaliate after the first World Trade Center bombing or after the SS Cole. I said to her: "I have 2 words for you that you will not want to hear. Bill Clinton." She amazed me by saying, "you are right."
