"Godbless The USA" (THE SONG)
oldgloryusa.com ^ | Les Greenwood

Posted on 09/17/2001 9:05:56 PM PDT by paltz

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where as least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S
.A.

I was at the Northwestern Mutual annual meeting when Lee Greenwood sang this song. I believe it was the same meeting when all the agents applauded spontaneously when Ronald Reagan's photo appeared in the slide show. It only happened once in three years.

Greenwood was electrifying when he sang "Proud to be an American." I think people should remember that we went through years of being ashamed of America and patriotism in particular. (I wasn't ashamed but I felt very much alone.)

The lyrics by themselves are not artful, but the song is stirring for unleashing a patriotic spirit not expressed in many years. At least there is some content. Who was it that bawled over and over: "Born in the USA, ah waz born in the USA"?

Saw Lee Greenwood perform this song at the Vermont Scout Jamboree back in '96. Highlight of the show.

All you cappuchino drinkers out there can go kiss a woodchuck.

Check out the music sharing service Morpheus, just do a web search. Comes pretty close to Napster. Do a search on "Patriotic", and you'll find a ton of good stuff.

Saturdays nites are meant for poetry readings, watching foreign films,or drinking a cup of capuchino with your friends.

...and Sundays spent on a quest for the Holy Grail?

Go suck on a lemon, Parsifal--it will sweeten you up.

As a person who CAN'T STAND country music, I ADORE this song and the conservative Christian PATRIOTIC man who wrote it.

Just so you know, this song in particular is BELOVED by active duty military personnel and veterans alike. I watched the Desert Storm troops at USO shows reacting to this song. These brave men stood up, and sang along with tears streaming down their cheeks--they were practically bursting with pride for their country.

So just HUSH UP, Parsifal, and stop being such a jerk.

drinking a cup of capuchino with your friends.

Really suave and sophisticated people drink it even without knowing how to spell it. Cool.

It's Christopher Lowell, host of a TV interior decorating show (I'm not kidding). He likes to join friends for cappuccino on Saturday nights.
