I had to reboot in order for the changes to take place (Windows Me)

Here you go.

Open your HOSTS file with a text editor (preferably NOTEPAD.EXE; if you use WORDPAD.EXE or WINWORD.EXE, be sure you save the file as raw text, not formatted. Also, be sure that you don't add a suffix like ".txt" to the file.) In a typical Windows 95-98-ME installation, your HOSTS file is

C:\Windows\hosts

In a typical Windows NT-2000 installation, your HOSTS file is

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add a line that looks like the following:

206.112.97.70 www.freerepublic.com

Now save your work, making sure, as above, that you don't add a suffix like ".txt" to the file, and that you save the file as raw, not formatted, text. You should be able to get to FreeRepublic without rebooting.

POTENTIAL DRAWBACK: Many months, or years, down the road, JimRob may change to a new ISP and receve a new IP address. If that happens, your computer will be hardwired to the old address, and it won't know to look for the new address. At that point in the future, try to remember that you altered your HOSTS file. (For instance, the FreeRepublic IP address was 24.142.63.193 before it became 206.112.97.70.)

I add, for clarification, that there may already be entries in the /hosts file for existing network configurations.

Simply add the new IP to the existing list, save the modified file, reboot, and away you go.

A couple of notes:

1. My "notepad" automatically appends a ".txt" to the file name when I save a file that doens't already have that extension. I had to go to the file and rename it to just "hosts". This can be done with "Explorer" or just use the file open box and right click on the "hosts.txt" file that you just created and choose "rename".
2. You have to close IE and restart it for the changes to take effect.

Use File Save As... and put double quotes around the name of the file when you save it: "hosts"

My wifes computer reached some other www.freerepublic.com today. My computer could access it just fine. Her computer was using a different DNS server for her network connection. Changed her's to what mine was using and everything is okay again.

I'm just a little concerned that there is another www.freerepublic.com (totally unrelated to our freerepublic) that other DNS servers may be pointing to.

If you use Netscape there is not problem in posting or reading. I do have AOL and Microsoft Explorer 6 and www.republic.com gives me a page saying the site is under construction. So, it's easier to use Netscape Navigator.

In Linux/Unix, edit /etc/hosts, add 206.112.97.70 www.freerepublic.com
Done! No reboots need in Unix.
