My alma mater -- already struggling with slashed state funding, meddling, megalomaniacal trustees and a demoralized faculty -- now has a racial controversy on its hands. In late October, members of two white fraternities, Delta Sigma Phi and Beta Theta Pi, celebrated Halloween with elaborate, racist tableaux.

I understand that's how the term was originated. But the farmers in my neighborhood ride in air conditioned tractors that rival a Lincoln in terms of comfort features and home mortgages in terms of payments. We don't refer to these gentlemen (the success of their crop production drives our local economy) as rednecks.

For the record: As an ardent defender of Southern herritage and flying of Confederate flags let me say that this behavior is disgusting.

So a bunch of frat boys get excoriated for donning black face and hoods. I'd like to see the same indignation, outrage, and screams for scalps when blacks openly talk about killing Whitey, cops, or whoever else they decide needs to die. Overtly racist black organizations not only exist on college campuses..............they thrive and usually due to, believe it or not, loads of university and/or government funding. THAT'S alright, I guess, right folks??? Black student publications that are horrible racist rags that continue ONLY due to outside funding, black student unions, various branches of The Nation of Islam or the "New Black Panthers" or any of a variety of similar groups that fairly ooze strident racism.

Yep.............they're just fine.

The hypocrisy of the author and many on this thread just sickens me.

Not that it really matters, but Delta Sigma Phi and Beta Theta Pi totally SUCK at AU. That might explain the poor behavior. These are not quality individuals.

Whatever happened to "freedom of expression" and the 1st Amendment?

Don't the same Constitutional protections that apply to crucifixes in urine and elephant-dung smeared pictures of the Virgin Mary apply to these guys too?

"Can you say "redneck"?

Even the 'rednecks' are disgusted by those Auburn Frats.

Oh Gawd, the dem loving Bobby Lowder is still on the board?

For the record, his brother, Jimmy, is an ardent Republican (big donor, too) and has a wonderful family.

I see no problem here. They were at a private party. Their costumes, and their attitudes, are none of the universities business.

Maybe the South is trying to actually do something about racism. Frankly, the KKK are looked upon as less than savory characters - I'm trying to be polite here. We don't exhibit the Virgin Mary depicted in elephant dung as art in our museums and some of our judges even display the Ten Commandments in their courtrooms.

I considered the KA's to be gentlemen (who consumed large quantities of beer, but, hey this was college) who were proud of their southern heritage...

Are you saying that lynchings are part of the Southern heritage?

"I suppose the PC police will supply the sheeple with a list of goverment approved halloween costumes in time for next years holiday."

I don't see this as a 'PC police' issue. I've never been able to comprehend the mindset of the idiots who donned white sheets and hung people because of the color of their skin. IMHO, those frats were exhibiting the same cowardice and lack of human decency.

No sir. The KA's (Kappa Alpha's) were not party to this action carried out by the Delta Sigma Phi and Beta Theta Pi fraternities.
