Presently, Marlin rules the roost on Lever Rifles,

We will have at least on Marlin. Probably a 30-30 (Dad has an older one that I might be able to buy). I'm looking more for the non-standard rifles. Something that will be good for the estate 50 years from now. Sorta like the Western Auto .22.

But, more than half the 1895 Winchesters sold were sold to the Russian Govt in 7.62x54 caliber.

That was the result of the first usage of lever rifles in battle AGAINST the Russians. Moslems in ??Albania? Chechnia? whooped butt on the Ruskis using the repeating rifle. I don't remember the date or the country off-hand, but it was a decisive battle and proved the worth of the repeating rifle.

I have owned exactly 2 rifles in my lifetime, and shot 3 counting the 2 I own now. My favorite is the Marlin Camp 9N Carbine, which they don't make anymore. The best part is when people at the range ask, "What's that?"

A Winchester 94 with Saddle Ring and made before 1964 will enhance the value of any estate in 50 years. A Springfield M1 would also be a great addition.

If a lever action is available with a box or a rotary magazine, then 7.62x39 would be a nice caliber.

Wow, that makes the Wife unhappy. She didn't realize there were that many variants. Box magazine lever rifles. Hmmmm. How many different ones would capture the essense of the genre for a well-rounded collection? grin!

Everything!

Seriously, for the purposes of this subject, the Colonel recommends the 30-30 lever action as an alternative to the 'assault rifle'. Won't go into semantics here. But the 30-30 seems to have similar ballistics to the 7.62x39. And is more acceptable 'socially'...

My guess is your'e talking about the old 99 series. My 99E
has a 5 round rotary cylinder in it. Can't think I've ever seen
one in the cal. you're thinking of. If you want the cal. stay with
an AK or SKS, even the Mini 30 by Ruger.

If you want the action, Winchester, or Uberti, But its all the Ford,
Chevy thing. Get one that makes you want to play with it!

M1A1 &ct. purchases were 1998. The suggestion about the pre '64 with a saddle rings works well. The Wife likes things related to horses and saddles. It should be a relatively easy sale. Except for the price. We'll work on it.

My own Christmas present to my gun safe is Glock 23. When I pick it up on Friday, it will be the last handgun I can legally obtain in California without jummping backwards through burning hoops

I have a 22 magnum model 94/22 Winchester.

I'll look for one. Is there a story behind any particular year model? Some little kick to make it more collectible.

Interesting! I didn't know that. I do recall some comment that the Russian sales of the 1895 saved the model from being dropped as a failure (since the US didn't accept it for military use.) It, the Russian sale, was also instrumental in keeping Winchester in business during a tough period for them.

the battle of plevna now bulgaria an overly confident imperial russian army attempted to storm the turkish position with their single shot rifles in the summer of 1877. the turks were armed with m1866 winchesters, and proceeded to annihlate the russian forces. when the russians desided to try a re-run of the same battle at the same place six weeks later, the results were the same. all in all the russians lost 30,000 men in the two debacles at plevna.

exerpt from the book "the fighting garand" edited by nolan wilson 1984 by desert publications.

I doubt anyone makes a lever rifle for the 7.62X39 but Marlin used to make one called the "Levermatic" This was chambered for the .30 carbine and, I think, the .22 magnum.

I am not sure if there is a market for it but believe the levermatic could be made in 7.62X39, fairly easily.

the battle of plevna

That's the one! See post #33.

One of the reasons I want lever rifles is because of the history. It was the FIRST reasonable multi-fire weapon used in battle against single-shot and breech-loaders.

I thought the new law on handguns doesn't go into effect until 2003, maybe I'm mistaken

I have a Winchester 94 chambered for 32 special. I also have a Winchester Centennial 1866/1066 with gold receiver ring and octagon barrel. New with box and papers(NFS) I would like to have a lever action 22 also. I had a Marlin in the 60s and traded it for something. I can't believe I still haven't gotten a Ruger 10/22 yet.

.22 lever rifles.

I have had a Marlin Model 39A for many years. The rifle can feed anything form .22 shorts through .22 long rifle ammo with no problems. The rifle has an excellent feel to hit. Most importantly, it is very accurate.

And you would be willing to let it go for $49.38. Right? right? Maybe not. 2002 is going to be more expensive than 2000.

Marlin Firearms makes quite a few lever action rifles in many different calibers including .22. You can find them on the web here: Marlin Firearms
