Pity poor Bill Clinton. While the rest of the country is worried about the war on terrorism, he's agonizing over -- surprise! -- his own legacy.
Seems that Clinton gathered a bunch of former aides and Cabinet secretaries to his New York office last week out of concern that his accomplishments as president have slipped from memory. They agreed to organize a corps of supporters to talk up his achievements and keep his profile from disappearing.
``We have to remind people of what we did on the economy, what we did with the crime bill, what we did with terrorism,'' one Clinton adviser told the New York Times. ``They're trying to pin the bin Laden thing on us.''
It's not unreasonable to muster one pang of sympathy -- just one -- for the ex-president. Even in the best of Clinton days (before the Lewinsky escapade), his strengths -- such as balancing the budget to help point the economy upward -- went unrecognized by his frothing opponents.
But Clinton's time as president is over. His latest scheme showcases perhaps Clinton's fatal flaw -- his boundless, blinding love of himself.
Better he should take a cue from the last Southern Democratic president, Jimmy Carter. In the two decades since he left office, Carter established a foundation in Atlanta promoting peace and democracy worldwide. If he isn't building houses for Habitat for Humanity, he's monitoring elections in Guyana or Indonesia.
Clinton could do the same, devoting himself to one of the issues he embraced during his presidency -- perhaps racial reconciliation or national service. Aside from improving the world, Carter's post-presidential service has transformed his image from failed president to wise elder statesman. If Clinton looked beyond himself for a change, he might be able to do the same.
But please, Nightstalker, the "Toon" was a rapist, traitor and a national security risk.
If you doubt this as fact, just wait until the reality slaps you in the face...it'll be out there in about 5 years. Trust me. We do not hate the "Toon"... it's just that some of us recognize fraud, demagoguery ,socialism and treason when we see it.

Back in 1998, I began a letter to the editor with
"In 1992, voters chose to reject a man of known leadership and moral character in favor of a man whose moral perfidy was well known to, but not mentioned by, reporters of national stature... they called him 'the dirty joke Governor'- but not to our faces...."
There were of course many other factors & cross-currents.... the entertainment industry's shilling for the clintons, Perot, former President Bush's hapless advisors and handlers, the media drumbeat on "the economy, Stupid!"
But never forget that both the news & entertainment indusrty loved the clintons madly, like a besotted teenager....
He continues to--attempt to, anyway--divide the country and the clintons deserve no moral credit; a fact that even some on the left are beginning to grasp.
They are rotten to the core, they think of no one unless that person can benefit them in some way, they would mow down anyone who gets in their way, they only voice support for an issue so as to get votes, and they are low-class white trash.

Oh Heaven, yes. Let's not consider the 3000+ dead and the big Ground Zero in Manhattan. Let's worry about Number 1, Clinton's legacy!
How selfish can you get?
What I am curious about whether he ever fought another man, with apologies to all of us men. There was another tale about when he hit on another mans wife and the man threatened to beat him to death, he ran like a whipped dog.
Pay attention now: Terrorism is bad. When innocent people are slaughtered it is not a good thing. Clinton's actions regarding terrorists centered around diverting attention from his many scandals. Even were we to disregard his lack of effort with regards to Bin Laden, how do you justify the release of the Puerto Rican terrorists?
This country will spend years uncovering the depths to which Clinton sunk. All who defended him will be scorned. Many of the worst things said about him will be revealed as the truth and even the liberal media will eventually admit their complicity.

Gee, I suppose we could just buy this "spin" attempt and give Clinton the credit suggested in this sentence -- along with the slap at conservatives like most on this forum... But Clinton's only contribution to balancing the budget was in allowing the GOP to take-over in 1994 which got spending under control for a few years (not many) while tax revenues eclipsed that spending thanks to the economy kick that started in 1982-3 under the Reagan tax cuts. Clinton's budgets forecast "deficits of $200+ billion for a far as the eye could see" until Newt and Dick Armey took over with the Contract on America. OK: give Clinton credit for not screwing up the economy more than he did (with Reich, et al) and accepting welfare reform, etc. That's all the credit he deserves.
Great legacy, Bill: you didn't screw up the economy while you were diddling with young girls, getting yourself impeached, and ruining the Justice Department for the 8 years you were President. It will take some extraordinary historians to burnish that legacy.
You know, I've wondered the same thing... Clinton is about my age, and I've always felt that he would have been the kind of kid I would have welcomed pounding on the playground if we ever had a confrontation. I didn't go looking for fights, but I would have welcomed taking on a punk like Bubba... even today!
The more I study the Clinton administration, the more I disagree with your statement. Clinton sold us out for the "great economy!" He ignored everything and anything to 'MAINTAIN' his great economic era. What a F##KING joke! This is why he is so FREAKED out NOW about his really horrible legacy.
