Recommendations for writing to Senators and President Bush on HR2356?

Posted on 02/17/2002 7:47:29 AM PST by RichardEdward

What is the best way to approach our opposition to HR 2356?

by 'best' i mean what should we tell our Reps/Senators/Presidnet to prevent this from becoming law .. what wording in our letters, emails, and phone calls will get them vote NO / Veto.. this issue????? What will make them fear losing in the next election if they support this issue????

David Osborne's petition to his congressman

a more general version of david's petition

Link to send email to congress and the President

please post your suggestions here .. forward the best ideas to everyone on your email lists and get them to take action NOW

The best action is for the Senate to amend the bill to remove the unconstitutional parts.

It's an easy and principled case to make.

The downside is that they then have to pass what remains.

I admire your optimism and stamina.

All I can do at this point is prepare myself for the president's Rose Garden ceremony---and hope the 180 degree change in my support for him will be temporary and short-lived.

Mini-Editorial:

Folks, all of us, when lauding, promoting, or referring to Free Republic to lurkers or browsers or the curious, ought to make a point of showing them- perhaps by emailing the link to it- the bump list.

With the admonition, "See how much you have not been told about? Now think of what you may have missed, because it simply was not talked about...."

Here's a Note to Activists:

for links, tools, & instructions about how to contact a pile of different people, and how to send a link to this story right here ( or anywhere else ) to a "mass email" using Outlook Express.

Frankly, I've always found a telephone call to be about as effective as anything- always be unstintingly courteous, but firm.

Letters that are one page long, neatly typed with footers, seem to get passed around staff more that multi-page missives. Don't overdo sarcasm, jokes, or clever nicknames- one or two, at the most, and if doubtful- don't.

The anthrax scare has breathed new life into faxes and emails, but a lot go unread, except for judging the direction of public opinion.

I have to agree. The whole thing, (to include the Federal Act of 1971) needs to be scraped. If I want to give a million dollars to someone, so be it. A dollar does not equal a vote.

Reflect, if there was no finance laws on the books, and I gave a billion dollars (thats a [B]) to support the candidate who wants to amend the Constitution to allow slavery, would that candidate win?

Yes, I have been; and will continue.

I just wish I weren't so weary of what nine times out of ten turns out to be futile and demoralizing.

another link: H. R. 2356 (A full text of the enacted measure)

The parts which outlaw and/or greatly restrict "(3) ELECTIONEERING COMMUNICATION".

Politically, the rest will probably have to be accepted, and is arguably Constitutional- though bad law which will just be cheated as usual.

:) (wouldn't go that far R_I_V.. but thanks)

how about approaching it from an angle similar to this.. please feel free to critique.. just an initial thought that could help to build support in the public arena"
Please oppose (veto if necessary) HR 2356. It is unconstitutional and takes away my ability to get my viewpoint out by contributing money to groups that then spend that money in ways this bill outlaws. Please stand for the ability of the people to join together so that their opinions can be heard in the political areana.

My letter to Congressman Hill (9th District Indiana) was very close to what you wrote Rich. It did'nt work on him though.

but it might work on others.. could we think of organizations that support particular congress members that would be hurt by this.. (the NRA is an obvious one.. but we probably wouldnt want to put that in a letter to a liberal)

any ideas??? if we all put together all of our ideas we can probably find some effective wording.. we know how libs (with the complicit media) try to make america they care about the 'little man'.. what can we focus on that will either force them to report it or will show people their hipocracy

Well the NAACP is another obvious one. That "Texas Dragging Death" ad that was run just prior to Election 2000 would be clearly illegal.
Any abortion ad (either for or against) even for information would be illegal.
The same goes for any Union support for a candidate aired in the Sept-Oct time frame.

Unfortunately with two Socialist witches infesting the Senate seats from my State there is no chance of influencing them, that leaves the President.

I think you can run a pro abortion ad, just not mentioning a candidate. I wonder if you could run your ad talking about only the issue and just have as your backdrop an actual print newstory about the candidate's position. They are allowed to specify.

Campaign finance "reform" is a DemocRAT scheme to stop the NRA from being able to tell voters that their congressman voted for a gun control bill. Bush signs the bill at his own peril.
