DC Chapter of FreeRepublic.com Pays Its Respects at the Pentagon Memorial - March 16, 2002

Members of the D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com stood vigil at the Pentagon Memorial on Saturday, March 16, 2002, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., as we paid our respects to those murdered on September 11 in the terrorist attacks. We also showed our continuing support for President Bush and the men and women in our armed forces as they conduct Operation Enduring Freedom.

It was a cloudy day filled with intermittent rain. Luckily for us, the rain stopped while we were there tending to the memorial and talking to the many visitors who still flock to the hillside to spend a few moments in silence, look at or read the various items left in memory of the victims of September 11, or leave something of their own at the memorial sites.

The red, white and blue carnations that we have been leaving beneath the larger of the saplings were joined by a bouquet of green carnations to commemorate St. Patrick's Day weekend. Many thanks go to tgslTakoma for arranging for the flowers most weeks. This week, they turned out to be especially colorful and lovely.

The remnants of the recent fire at the memorial are still visible, but new items are being added every week.

I spoke with a couple visiting from Maine who said they had been to New York and took a chance that they could come to the Pentagon. The husband was retired from the Navy and they had many questions regarding the damage to and reconstruction of the Pentagon.

Present at the Pentagon on Saturday were: tgslTakoma, kristinn, stand watie, BufordP, Gore_ War_ Vet and his family and myself. Just past 3:00 p.m. we left the Pentagon Memorial and adjourned to Bennigan's near Landmark Shopping Center where we joined other Chapter members for a planning session regarding the April 20 counterprotest to anti-war rallies scheduled that day.

Pictures of the day's activities will be posted shortly by tgslTakoma.

One note of interest: There are large pictures of BKO and BCM along with memorial statements mentioning that they were members of FreeRepublic.com which are on display with the flower arrangements. I understand from tgslTakoma that these items have had to be replaced often because they seem to disappear.

The DC Chapter of FreeRepublic.com will be at the Pentagon Memorial again next week. Please join us if you are in the area.

A small baggie, with several personal tokens, placed by an Ohio family. Many people have left small items, poems, flowers, prayers, medallions and other items at the Pentagon knoll... as tokens of their respect and of their grief.

Not anymore. :-(

Sheesh! The place I uploaded them to allows a certain amount of bytes transferred, which includes whenever somebody looks at the pix. I guess too many people looked at the images, and now they won't let anyone see them. I guess I got what I paid for (free image hosting) grrrrr...

Back to the drawing board for me.

Thanks for the ping, sweetie. Sorry I was not able to make the Pentagon FReep, but I am glad I got to the Bennigans FReep!

Thanks for all that you are doing -- don't know if I told you that Saturday.

And, thanks to kristinn and Angelwood for their continuing heoric efforts to keep our Republic FRee.

Shoot, while I'm thanking people, thank you all, each and every one of you, for all that you do to ensure that America remains a FRee Republic!

Whether you contribute time, talent or treasure (or some measure of each), every contribution is important. Without your efforts, America will not long remain a FRee Republic.

So, keep it up, FReepers! We are making a hellofa difference!

And the really important thing for us all to do is to keep the objective in sight and not get distracted from our goal!

“I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” [Thomas Jefferson, letter to Benjamin Rush, 1800.]

Scrap the Code! Scrap the IRS! Abolish the VLWC!

We will never be a truly FRee people so long as we have the income tax and the IRS.
