Best Place to Live in USA
N/A ^ | March 21, 2002 | Me

If you could live and work from anywhere in the U.S, where would that be?

Take into consideration lifestyle, schools, recreation, weather, cost and quality of life, etc.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on Norman. I lived there while at OU, and it is actually probably the most liberal city in Oklahoma. And tornadoes have a way of missing Norman. I read somewhere that a tornado has not actually hit Norman in many, many years. People speculate on the reasoning for it, but it is truly fact.

That one in May '99 was headed right for Norman, but went right around it and hit Moore. I know because I was on I-35 not far from Moore when it hit.

Having said all of this, my wife and I miss Norman a lot, and have had occassional thoughts on moving back one day. It would save a lot of trips on Gamedays that way!

Colorado Springs is not a good job market right now, especially high tech related employment - it's where I grew up and I would NEVER live there again, based on how much it has changed in the last ten years - it's a pretty town, lots of touristy things to do, but not recommended for living - the schools are terrible now as well.

Greeley Colorado is home for me now - decent schools, GREAT cost of living (Ft. Collins, Boulder (OK, so ONE major drawback), Denver, Longmont) all under an hour or so away, where it costs easily twice what it does here: small town environment, good local university (Fighting Whities notwithstanding!) - and it's where the Denver Broncos hold training camp, just three blocks from my front door!

InSane Diego is great with weather and recreation. The cost of living is high but if your thrifty there are ways to minimze this. Quality of life is good. There are a variety of places to go and things to do. As far as schools and raising children, you'd better go somewhere else unless you can afford private school or want to do home schooling.

The best place to live in the US is as near as possible to your family. Your parents, grandparents, uncles, cousins and family friends.
I've traveled and lived in several regions of our country and each has advantages/disadvantages; afterall Nirvana is not on the map. But the thing that no other place except one had is roots.

You're a pretty smart guy, you know that?

Don't move to Phoenix, we have too damn many ex Los Angelinos here already..

So that's why they call Phoenix "LA in the desert".

You know, Phoenix is the only city in the country where the temperatures resemble oven settings.

You guys in fly over country got it wrong. The west coast is on the right side of the country.

Bump to that.

And I suppose NYC, D.C., Philly, and the whole states of Vermont and Mass. are bastions of conservatism? Face it, the liberal establishment is mostly on east coast.

Forget the weather part, you must endure less-than-nirvana meteorologically speaking to live among genuine people. Go North young man, go North.
