Course On African-American Men Offered At Temple

by KYW's Karin Phillips

For the first time, Temple University is offering a special course that examines the Black man in America.

Instructor Ed Coleman says his course, The Black Man, is designed to look beyond all of the grim statistics and media stereotypes and get students to critically examine the roots and characteristics of the modern African American man.

According to Coleman, the black man's baggage has its roots in slavery, when the role of manhood was subverted from provider to survivor and sexual tool. "Where African American men or African men had been forced to be breeders and studs and that became the prevalent notion of what it meant to be a man where the emphasis was placed on the individual rather than the family or the community."

The class, which is in Temple's African American studies department, covers education, spirituality, health and criminal justice issues and relationships.

I didn't say that. I would rather they were though. I don't particularly care for the way the media encourages interracial dating. I have no doubt that there are many black parents who fell the same way.

I guess the folks at Temple have forgotten this.

Not just Temple, Marxist/Leftists are the rule far more than the exception. Colleges love to advance the “all minorities are victims of the evil, selfish white, and usually the white man.” In fact, I’d be hard pressed to think of a University that doesn’t have an African American Studies program which advances exactly this type of garbage under the auspices of academia.

When I think about the values that Martin Luther King extolled, which, boiled down was a color blind society and I see where the “civil rights leaders” of today have led society, and the black community in particular, he must be spinning in his grave.

Classes like this just further exacerbate “racial relations” by trying to exaggerate differences and shift blame from those responsible (the individual) to a loosely defined group (society or whitey).

My sister does a lot of couceling of young girls outside of abotion clinics. What she tells me is that a very high percentage of the girls going in are the children of wealthy white liberals who have been made pregnant by black men.

Who cares - I think it's stupid to be concerned about trivialities like race when it comes to dating.

The idiot professor can't even get that right. "Breeding" was looked down upon by slave owners. That's why their children were sold. Slaves were encouraged *not* to "breed."

And the emphasis on "individualism" when you're a... slave? Haha! This man is a genius!

"Ignorant comments like this only underscore the need for such a course."

There is no way that you can deny that the poster was right.

You can only say that if you're as ignorant as the poster is.

Did YOU get out of your van and give her some fatherly advice about the kind of life she is going to have if she continues in her current mode?

What kind of life is that? I think it depends on what kind of "black dude" she likes to go with, or do you only know about one kind?

(That being said, 13 is too young to be going out with any "dude." I'd be more concerned about that than who she's going out with)

I was just being my usual cynical, sarcastic and curmudgeonly self...

I resent that. And I did get my undergraduate degree at Temple University.

Got any more stereotypes?

Those pesky stereotypes - the problem is, there's usually an underlying truth in them.

"In fact, I’d be hard pressed to think of a University that doesn’t have an African American Studies program..."

Please tell me what are you going to do with a degree in African American Studies? Be a doctor, lawyer, accountant or engineer? NOT. You'll probably end up in the remote window asking customers "do you want fries with that?". You'll probably contunue to go through life hating white people ( and most everybody else ) and thinking racism is the problem when all that really happened is you were duped by the liberal university you went to. They took four years of your (probably the taxpayers ) money and gave you nothing in return. Are you going to homecoming?

Really? Gee, I did not know that. < /sarcasm>

That's not the problem. The problem is when stereotypes, which contain a "grain" of truth, are inflated with falsifications then used to smear a whole group.

Since you seem to know it all, how come you didn't complete the definition of the term? Your flippant response to my post calls into question your true motives. It may be wrong, but, it definitely begs the question.

It's so much easier for people to think in stereotypical terms than it is to judge people individually, which is what I thought conservatism was all about.

So, which is it, glock? If you see me, do you see a stereotypical black, or do you see an individual MAN?

Please, please, try and re-read my posts on this thread. The fact that you seem to have mistaken me for an African American Studies major really makes me wonder if you have any sense of humor or an idea of what sarcasm is at all.

Hopefully, I’ve missed yours, but the fact that you referred to me eight times without a disclaimer, I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt.

"This is the same girl that wrote a letter to a Sudanese boy at the home, calling him sexy man and telling him that she wanted him to do a threesome with her and her Native American friend.

ANY 13 year old talking like she was (see above) NEEDS fatherly advice, and fast......because she's made it clear what kind of dude she's interested in....read ALL the post before getting on your high horse, please.

I wasn't sure if your concern was over her age or the fact that she is into "black dudes." If it's the former, then I would be wrong for accusing you based on the latter. It looks like we're on the same page about this and there's nothing for either of us to take offense with.
