- Toby Keith Gets 'Kicked Off' ABC's Independence Day Special
Launch! Your Yahoo Music Experience ^ | 06/13/2002 | Nancy Brooks

Posted on 06/14/2002 9:07:33 AM PDT by SantosLHalper

(6/13/02, 4 p.m. ET) - Toby Keith was asked to perform his current bold and not-so-politically correct hit "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" on an upcoming ABC Fourth of July TV special in Salt Lake City hosted by ABC's own Peter Jennings. The deal fell through and according to Keith, it was Jennings himself who pulled the plug on the singer's performance.

He told LAUNCH: "The person with ABC who books it said, 'You're on, we want you to open the show with that song.' Fine, we made arrangements to be there. Got everything off the next day where we were doing two shows that day now, so we took the next day or two off. And Peter Jennings comes in and says that that song has lyric content that does not belong on his television network. So, I've been kicked off the special."

So what was Keith's reaction to Jennings's objection to his performing? "I think he's Canadian ain't he? So, It's our Fourth of July, not his. Tell him worry 'bout his and I won't come up there and sing at it either. But I will write him a new song."

Keith's "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" is the singer's fastest rising-single to date. It currently sits at Number 12 this week on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

Keith wrote the song in the aftermath of the September 11 tragedies and the death of his father, who fought for the U.S. in the Army and lost his right eye.

Fox should jump on this, hire Toby and do their own show.

If Toby wanted to be the fave artiste of the annointed, he'd be writing songs about oppression, racism and fascism (hey, the last two even rhyme!) Guaranteed top billing, guaranteed untouchable status (with "racism" alone, even here!) Let's get started:

"Mamma was oppressed by racism,
Victim of the state of fascism,
Drove a prison truck of sexism,
Died of mean-spirited ageism"

Take it from there Toby! I'll take the top songwriting credit and in return we'll agree to publish through your music company.

Exactly.

On his news broadcast, I can see some content control (though the mere mention of content control shows that there is a bias). Even though he is nothing more than a glorified reader, I can see (though it doesn't hold much validity) an argument in that forum.

But, in an ABC special? This is what is so key to this story. I mean, of all places where he might want to remain "objective", it should be his news broadcast. The place he should be least concerned (and "let his hair down", so to speak) with an "objective" outlook would be an ABC special featuring muscial acts such as Mr. Keith.

This is a bunch of horse crap.

Note to ABC: Have you figure out why auidences have left en masse? Here is yet-another example...get it?

"Thank you Peter for keeping the rednecks off of my TV. Don't we already have the country channel for that crap?"

!10 out of 10 rednecks (inclusing their sisters) could kick the shiite out of your wimpy liberal arse.

Here are my thoughts.

This Oklahoma "rednecker" likes all kinds of music and is especially a big fan of "soft adult comtemporary" music. That music format has had a few country songs on it's charts like "I hope you dance" and more recently "Bring on the rain."

It would sure be great to see Toby Keith's song crossover to the AC charts. He one true American and a great artist too.

As to the ABC deal with Keith, this is just example of why these news organizations are our enemies and not our friends. That JWalker fella if I'm not mistaken is the one who bad-mouthed Rush on another thread. Anybody that takes up for these news organizations (ABC,CBS,NBC,CNN,CNBC,MSNBC, et' al) is sleeping with the enemy as far as I'm concerned.

Good bye and good riddance to that no good disruptor. Glad to see Jim and the moderators on the ball.
regards.

I'd like to keep this bumped to the top. I wish to do this for the sake of liberty and freedom. And also justice for all who fought and died defending America from Liberal-Communist-Socialist-S.O.B 's who own and rule over the American people through the Media.

Anybody knows that a good country music tune HAS to refer to one's dog (NOT CAT!) dying.

"Fido was wasted by speciesism"? Kinda rolls off the tongue, dunnit? <|:)~

Here's the spoken words he spoke before a live version of this song:

"Following September 11th, anybody who was a writer or a poet, or a songwriter of any kind, had a reason to write some words down or some thoughts down on a piece of paper and I was no different than anybody else. That's what you do when you do what I do. My father served in the Army in the 50s. He lost his eye in a training combat mission. He came home and put a flag up on the farm I was raised on. I lost him six months prior to the attacks on New York City and the United States. And that flag flew out in that yard has flown there every day. He raised me right and he never bitched one time about losing his eye; never heard him cry about it one time. He was glad to go do it, and that's why we are free today. And it's our turn to stand on what our fathers and forefathers did for us, and make sure we don't let 'em down. I wrote a song in the following days after September 11th, it's called The Angry American, and I'm gonna send this out to my father tonight."

Here's a Southern and Texas Redneck PING.

As I have said on here before, if you want to get these weasels, go after their advertisers. I don't watch ABC News and haven't for years, but anyone who does please post their advertisers here so we can write them and boycott them. Bite 'em in the pocketbook where it hurts. Here's my letter to ABC:

I don't watch ABC News and haven't for years. It's actions like Mr. Jennings' most recent rejection of Toby Keith's song at the beginning of his 4th of July special which validates my decision. It also begs the question, "Why on God's green earth can't you people find a newscaster who reflects the patriotism that I and the majority of Americans feel towards our beloved country." This has angered me enough that I will now seek out your advertisers and post them on websites so that others may write them as I will and boycott their products.

...I just heard the Enemy Within ..PETER JENNINGS.. disparagingly GRUNT at us on National TV as he reported USA's backing into the next Stage of the World Cup Soccer Tournament while losing to Poland today.

...I say again ...JENNINGS... insulted the USA on USA TV.

...And he knows that nothing's going to happen to him ...just like a Catholic Priest now knows that nothing's going to happen to him after Sexually Abusing -1- Child in America.

This is NUTS.

I have never been a fan of Peter Jennings. And I truly believe that the enemies lie within our media and that it is those like Jennings who may be subtly sending off code communications to potential terrorists. He's not for America and never was.

Does anyone know if this is being broadcast live? I recall a couple of years back when George Jones refused to sing an abreviated version of his new song on a CMA show. He was removed from the line-up and Alan Jackson (a self-proclaimed George Jones fan) went onstage during the live broadcast and rather than singing his own song as had ben done in rehersals, he sang the George Jones song. It was truly great.

Hank Williams Jr. has been slated to replace Toby Keith as the opener in the ABC show. I am tempted to watch the opening in order to see if history repeats itself.
