ESCRAVOS, Nigeria (AP) -- An oil company has agreed to build schools and electrical and water systems to satisfy a group of women who had taken 700 workers hostage in a southeast Nigeria oil terminal.

Monday's deal signaled an end to the weeklong takeover, which featured a typical tactic with a new twist: Young men frequently resort to kidnapping in the oil-rich Niger Delta, but the peaceful, all-women protest was unprecedented.

It seems the women are taking matters into their own hands.

As long as it's legal and non-violent I really don't care what they do. Just as long as they resect the rights of others not to put up with them.

Excellent protest. I am proud of these women and what they accomplished (without violence). Indeed the companies should give back something to the communities where they are making money off of the resources and not just fill the coffers of the (most probably) corrupt governement officials.

It is not the responsibility of Chevron to build communities. They gave plenty to the Nigerian government, it is they that are responsible for taking care of their own people, not the corporations, if the government is corrupt, that is not Chevron's problem.

By their Neville Chamberlain-like actions today, Chevron is only going to encourage more to do the same.

This story is out of date. The deal fell through and Nigerian women have taken over four more facilities.

I wonder why you are so proud of criminals and extortionists. Can I send a few hundred people over to your house tonight to demand money?
