LEXINGTON -- Davidson County Sheriff Gerald Hege gave a huge boost today to an underdog contender for the U.S. Senate, endorsing local lawyer Jim Snyder over GOP front runner Elizabeth Dole.
Davidson County's most prominent public official said that while he respects Dole, she has lived away from North Carolina too many years to be an effective representative of its people.
"She is from North Carolina, but she hasn't been around in a long, long time," Hege said in remarks in front of Davidson's former courthouse.
All things considered, maybe it was a Godsend after all that our primaries have been delayed. More time to send the carpetbagger packing.
Snyder's chances are predicated on continuing to make his grassroots charge and uptempoing the energy of his field reps -- combined with what should be a very low turnout in the primary. With the state party bungling the state house and senate lineups and discouraging primary opponents from running -- they are actually playing into Snyder's hands by discouraging interest, and thus voter turnout for a primary likely to be overshadowed by 9/11 anniversary media coverage.
Jim Snyder with probably 60,000 votes in the bag right now and it is not outside realistic expectations to assume the primary could have as few as 150-170 thousand GOP voters. With Dr Fisher drawing several thousand female and moderate voters from the Dole column, the numbers begin to get interesting. Snyder's conservative straight forward approach beginning to resonate with the "real people" in the party.
Ms Dole picking a bad time to take a nap.

Your abject failure to gain any real name recognition will be what doomed you, Greg. What a shame, because you have great potential.
Are you insinuating the previous post bad mouths a Republican candidate? It merely attempts to provide an analysis of dynamics that are impacting this race. If those in the Dole camp want to believe this primary is a done deal then that is their privilege.
However I think you will agree this election year cycle presents quite a different scenario. Failure to be flexible in one's thinking creates vulnerabilities that Democrats exploit.
If you think a lack of name recognition is hurting candidate Dority and you believe he is a good candidate then help him get that name recognition. Remember that at the end Leamas would not/could not get over the wall -- make sure he does not endure the same fate...

As a candidate, you should be working your tail off to get yourself elected, not offering your commentary about the State GOP or other Republican campaigns. You have no business saying that Dole is taking a nap (which isn't true), when precious few people down east even know who you are. If she's taking a nap, then Greg Dority is comatose.
You will soon start to find a coolness to your campaign in quarters where it had not existed because you have forgotten Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment.
Bull. Bush won this state well under two years ago by 13 points!
That means - in a 25%-black state - Bush must have won virtually the entire nonminority vote, female as well as male, urban as well as rural, poor as well as rich, young or old, married or single, gay or straight or lesbian. Bush won the most-urban counties in this state (Mecklenburg, Forsyth, Guilford). The only places Bush lost were a couple "college town" counties and a bunch of dirt-poor heavily-black ones.
And you want us to settle for some carpetbagging RINO imposed on us by Washington elites - a RINO who has flip-flopped on guns and abortion in the past two years? If she gets nominated, lots of social conservatives just either won't vote in the Senate race at all - or will vote for protest candidates. Because we won't support a GOP that doesn't support us. We can always get Erskine Bowles or Dan Blue out at the end of one term - but we could get stuck with Dole forever, and we won't risk that.
Liddy Dole's recent voter registration in North Carolina - is it illegal?
1) You want to be added to my North Carolina ping-list.
2) You no longer want to be included in this North Carolina ping-list.
FRegards,
Constitution Day
No, it's not. I will vote for Snyder in the primary and that's it. If he wins, I'll vote for him in the election, if not, I'll write in someone. I'm not having it on my conscience of electing a gun-grabbing, pro-abortion, pro-tariff Senator for this state. And that's Giddy!!
