A Timely Subject -- and a Sore One

UNC Draws Fire, Lawsuit for Assigning Book on Islam

By Alan Cooperman

Wednesday, August 7, 2002; Page A01

No one complained two years ago when the University of North Carolina required its incoming freshmen to read a book about the lingering effects of the Civil War, nor last year when it assigned a book about a Hmong immigrant's struggle with epilepsy and American medicine.

. . .

But a national TV talk show host, Fox News Network's Bill O'Reilly, compared the assignment to teaching "Mein Kampf" in 1941 and questioned the purpose of making freshmen study "our enemy's religion."

All the more reason for studying it. Maybe more Americans should have read Mein Kampf in 1941 and earlier. Know thine enemies! The best antidote to Islamism, a ghastly ideology which does not stand up to scrutiny, is, well, scrutiny.

I happen to agree with you there, pttttt!

Since 9/11 I’ve been absolutely appalled by the rampant ignorance concerning islam. From W’s “religion of peace” jaw dropper to the seemingly ubiquitous “it’s [the koran] just like the Bible”. Exactly where in the Bible does it say that a Christian should "Kill the disbelievers wherever we find them" (Koran 2:191) or "Not to make friendship with Jews and Christians" (Koran 5:51)?

While the animals who committed the atrocities of 9-11 and I likely would agree on almost nothing, we are in full agreement that they were putting the tenants of their religion into practice.

My one concern with this is that it’s being done at a university and there’s a good likelihood that the Yusaf Ali translation will be substituted with the Penguin Pocket Classics version-

"Fight and slay the Pagans, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem" (Koran 9:5) [Yusaf Ali]
“Welcome and love Christians and Jews, help them in their struggles and walk with them” (Koran 9:5) [Owl_Eagle paraphrasing his Penguin koran]

I wonder whether the UNC administration will be assigning the Bible for next year's reading assignment. And whether the ACLU would keep quiet about it.

You do raise a serious point, about knowing one's enemies. However, given the politically correct atmosphere at UNC, I suspect that this course will feature a respectful, rather than critical, look at Islam. In fact, it is entirely possible that the PC Left could bring "hate speech" charges against students who criticized Islam.

Deuteronomy 13:6-18, maybe? It doesn't sound too friendly to me.

6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.

12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in 13 that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, [1] both its people and its livestock. 16 Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt. 17 None of those condemned things [2] shall be found in your hands, so that the Lord will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your forefathers, 18 because you obey the Lord your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes.

Know thine enemies!

If that was what this was about then I would agree too. Unfortunately the book the incoming freshmen were assigned leaves out all the quotes about killing infidel, etc. Nothing but pro-islam propaganda is in the book.

"Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again."

Thats ok I'm not an Israeli. Or does this reference to Israel mean something else, perhaps those who have accepted Christ as their savior? Never ceases to amaze me the stock we put in Israel (modern state) just because it it it's people are mentioned in the Bible.

Newsflash, the Christian people are todays "Israelites". They have accepted Christ. Is there any other way to heaven?

I highly doubt it

thanks for the post. anyone who read mein kampf prior to 1940 would not have been surprised that world war ii and the holocaust happened. (neville, if you ever come back to life, have i got a book for you...)

unfortunately, i am not too sure that the religion of islam is being followed by islamic fundamentalists, and for that matter, most of the islamic people. two cases in point. first, louis farrakhan leads an islamic sect here in america whose stated goal is the overthrow of the american government and the cultural enslavement of whites. that does not sound like a message of peace is being taught.

second, all the muslim clerics i have heard have been appoligists for the arab nations, the islamic people and the events of 9-11. hate is tolerated, in fact it is enabled by these leaders.

the koran may teach peace, but the islamic nation does not seem bound to these teachings. these poor students will not 'know thine enemy' by reading the koran.

a better approach would be to compare islam with christianity. the differences, once highlighted, show that islam can only be trouble.

romans 9 emphatically makes your point.

the misinterpretation of this part of bible by such spiritual leaders (and good men, i might add) as jerry falwell have caused the united states to pour lots of foreign aid to the state of israel, simply to allow [misinterpreted] bible prophecy to happen -- like god really needs our help!

i am all for supporting our good allies, the israelites, but lets do it for temporal reasons, not for [misguided] spiritual ones.

perhaps those who have accepted Christ as their savior? No, most certainly not.

I do not know whether to laugh or to cry at the honesty of your prejudice and ignorance. "Mentioned in the Bible?" Israelites gave you the Bible. Even what you call New Testatement is a life story of a Jew named Joshua written by other Jews.

You've got a lot of reading to do. And even more looking into your heart.

Sorry for the slow reply, been on vacation for a while and plenty other catching up to do.

I thought God gave us the Bible - silly me. As for your comment on "what you call the new testement" this certainly speaks volumes on your own prejudice's, which is OK as it saves me from having to do it.
