Charlton Heston says he may have Alzheimer's

'I can part the Red Sea, but I can't part with you'

08/09/2002

Associated Press

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Charlton Heston revealed Friday that doctors have told him he has symptoms similar to Alzheimer's disease.

"I'm neither giving up nor giving in," the 78-year-old actor said in a taped statement played at a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Heston recorded the statement on Aug. 7.

"My dear friends, colleagues and fans, my physicians have recently told me I may have a neurological disorder whose symptoms are consistent with Alzheimer's disease," he said.

"I wanted to prepare a few words for you now because when the time comes I may not be able to," he said.

Heston, who won a best-actor Oscar for Ben Hur in 1959, has appeared in a number of films, including The Ten Commandments, El Cid, and Planet of the Apes.

"I worked my whole life on the stage and screen before you," he said. "I found purpose and meaning in your response. For an actor, there is no greater loss than the loss of his audience.

"I can part the Red Sea, but I can't part with you," Heston said.

Yeah we ran into same thing here in Texas when a really stoopid reporter named Molly Ivans got sick with some sort of cancer.

I despise the woman and every piece of verbage she spews but I said a prayer for her as I just won't kick a person when they are down.

I still write her and tell her to shut her seditious socialist yap and close with wishing her good health and a long life.

Possibly some of that is based on wanting her to dwell in the squalid socialist utopia ahe seems to think is best for our childrens children...............

I did not like Heston in the past as he was LBJ's poster boy for the Gun Control Act of 1968. He helped drive that fiasco down our throats then and I just don't forget when kicked in the teeth. Fool me once, your fault.....fool me twice, my fault.

I hope Heston's life is long and peaceful as I think and hope he is trying to do the right thing now. I have personally met the man many times and thanked him for the good he has done recently with regards to the RKBA efforts and scolded him for taking an active roll in the unconstitutional GCA68.

Just my opinions of course ...........Stay Safe !

To hear Charlton Heston's most memorable quote, please visit:

and simply wait for the brief soundbyte to download. It's great, and it's also from my favorite movie (an Oscar-winner, and major money-maker by the way).

I do not at all approve of his half-stepping support of some peoples' right to own some firearms. But I do have a memory of him from his better times, and I'd prefer to remember him that way.

I keep on reading the same crap that is supposed to have been attributed to Mr. Heston and the only thing I can find is where AK's make him nervous but he said they shouldn't be banned or outlawed. How is that statement stepping on your rights?

That website that you linked has a continual habit of criticizing the NRA. That's probably why they only had 20,000 signatures on their petition. If some gun group refuses to work together, they don't get a dime from me.

Remember: The good thing about Alzheimers is that you're
always meeting new people.
