A remarkable gaffe

A remarkable gaffe by Sheila Jackson-Lee, a Republican legislator from Texas and member of a congressional space and aeronautics committee, has Capitol Hill abuzz.

On a visit to the Mars Pathfinder mission control centre in California she is reported to have inquired whether the space probe had succeeded in taking pictures of the American flag planted by the astronaut Neil Armstrong in 1969.

"We just don't teach enough science," lamented Vernon Ehlers, another member of the committee.

Jackson Lee promoted the August event, and her staff said they helped 200 Houstonians take the first step toward getting jobs as airport screeners.

Now that's a scary thought!

I recall that anytime Elian Gonzales was on TV SHE was there, too! No matter that she wasn't from Florida OR Cuba! But there was a TV camera there....

Can the same be said of Daschle's, Gephardts, Franks', Sanders', Clinton's, and Wellstone's constituents?

Case in point: The ad running here in Houston for Tom DeLay, arch-conservative, boasting about how much, how quickly and how desperately he wants to use OUR money to pay for prescription drugs for seniors.

That's not really accurate. It's an ad run by a senior's lobby, which masquerades as an ad for Tom DeLay. It's pushing prescription drug coverage, by piggybacking on DeLay's popularity.

It's subtle and effective, and if I were Tom DeLay, I think I'd be a little angry about this ad.
