Ivan gets my award for the best UK interpretation and summary of President's Bush's speech:

"Given all the facts that I have described, the UN can either prove that is a guardian of world peace, or that its utility towards the progress of mankind has crumbled into the dust. It can stand foursquare for freedom, or fade into insignificance. It can be bold and resolute, or shamefully perish, a victim of its own cowardice. The choice is yours."

While President Bush did not say this in Ivan's words, there is no doubt with most Americans that President Bush has served notice on the Cowards running the UN.

They can be with us to stay relevant, or they will become irrelevant and slide into history's trash bin with other irrelevant losers in history.

I hear you; it's hard to excerpt them properly, and unless one is much better at typing than I am, mistakes WILL happen and too little will get out.

That having been said, I'm working on it. I should have the full document up in about a half-hour as a reply to the thread linked in #1001.

Let me see, Bush pulled off a fabulous move, both morally and political.

His speech defined the morality of taking down Saddam, made the case to the U.N. and made the case to Congress.

One speech, several bases covered, rather than diluting the message by endlessly repeating it, it was done once, in front of the world.

I haven't heard any of the talking heads comment on how well the speech was received overseas, but I agree totally with...I think it was Fred Barnes... who applauded President Bush for the theme of his speech which was to point the finger of responsibility at the UN. To remind the UN: It was the UN who allowed Saddam to get away with his "Decade of Defiance". For pointing out to the UN, that Saddam has thumbed his nose at their sanctions for all this time, with impunity.

Holy cow! I take a little time to watch the speech and answer a phone call and have 1,000+ posts to read. Howlin, did you ping the world, lol? Seriously, this was a great thread to read. FReeper analysis is always better than the talking heads on tv. Once again W did us proud. Looks like we'll be rolling over Iraq very soon.

Did anyone else catch MSNBC when Brian Williams had on UN inspector Butler from Australia to comment on Bush's speech? Butler was VERY complimentary. But the line I liked best was when he said about a month ago, while in Crawford, Bush said he was a patient man. But with today's UN speech he was saying "OK, MY PATIENCE IS UP"!! Loved it.

I loved the guy in the Iraqi delegation taking notes the whole time:

"To President Hussein Saddam: I respectfully tender my resignation ...."

Right and the same ones whining about Bush going after Saddam during the election season will be the same blow-hards who, during the impeachment hearings moaned: "But how can we discuss these trivial issues while our soldiers are in the field?"

Today at the White House, Sept. 12, 2002
President's Remarks at the United Nations General Assembly
President Bush Thursday said, "My nation will work with the U.N. Security Council to meet our common challenge. If Iraq's regime defies us again, the world must move deliberately, decisively to hold Iraq to account. We will work with the U.N. Security Council for the necessary resolutions. But the purposes of the United States should not be doubted. The Security Council resolutions will be enforced -- the just demands of peace and security will be met -- or action will be unavoidable. And a regime that has lost its legitimacy will also lose its power." full story

Anyone see any see any parallels to this:

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 ~ a date which will live in infamy ~ the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces ~ with the unbending determination of our people ~ we will gain the inevitable triumph ~ so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

Can you imagine what this past year would have been like if Reagan had not taken his stand against the USSR? God has been blessing us in ways we did not know.

Getting some reaction from the pinheads on BBC Radio. Essentially, what the host and the people they chose to comment have said is that it is crystal clear what the President's intentions are with regard to Iraq, but that he essentially provided nothing new, and thus may not have made a strong enough case for regime change. They did say they could not recall when any leader had been so direct with the U.N., that past speeches in this veinThis argument is complete rubbish. Lets just say for the sake of argument, that nothing new was provided. What the President then summarized is a clear, brazen pattern of disregard for the U.N. and their resolutions. If the media buttheads believe the President did not make a strong enough case, what they are saying is that any country has the right to go rogue, disregard the impotent U.N. and do as they please.

I'm not surprised at the reaction of this particular BBC host. He has admitted to being anti-American on occasions I have listened to him and seems to hold a particular contempt for President Bush.

They are afraid for their own regimes.

Precisely. Why else would Iran go door to door collecting satellite dishes when Afghanistan was freed.....it looks MIGHTY good on TV.
