UNITED NATIONS (AP) - After a meeting Friday with Secretary of State Colin Powell, the European Union's foreign policy chief said a Security Council resolution on Iraq was expected within weeks.

"I wouldn't say months, but weeks," Javier Solana said when asked about the timing of a resolution which would likely demand that Saddam Hussein allow the return of weapons inspectors.

Asked whether the 15-member EU would support military action in Iraq, Solana said: "We'll face the question when it comes."

I think the new resolution will call upon Saddam to live up to all of the previous resolutions and the surrender agreement or else. The or else being the US will be authorized to use force. I took your post as thinking this approach was more appeasement, but I may have misinterpreted it, sorry.

Weapons inspections are meaningless, since enough weaponized anthrax to kill millions of Americans could already easily be hidden in a few jam jars anywhere in the 170,000 sq. miles of Iraq or the 6 million sq. miles of the USA. By shifting the debate to the subject of weapons inspections, Saddam wins. But Bush buys some time, also, while we try to build up some defense against the anthrax threat, so another couple of years or so of haggling over pointless weapons inspections might be what he has in mind, too.

Giving Saddam another opportunity to stall is beneficial how?

Gives us time to buildup more men and material in the region while the diplomatic moves provide the headlines.

Great point. We cannot count on weapons inspections, even if genuine and thorough. Instead, we need a government in Iraq that will not make or use WMM's.

Correct. The problem is how to get from here to there without getting killed in the process.

He's probably getting his distract & harass the weapons inspectors and shell game teams ready as we speak.

Undoubtedly. I'm sure he will also be hoping that the peaceniks around the world come out in droves to turn the tide of public opinion.

Disagree. Time works for Saddam for the reason I state in post #26.

So far, America's allies have responded positively, but all eyes will be on Russia and China - two veto-wielding countries whose views on Iraq could make or break Security Council support for any U.S. action against Saddam.

I am counting on Putin to be with us. I don't expect him to let us down here.

Create the USCN (United States' Cooperating Nations). Which means we have moral authority in this world so support us or be our enemy.

You can disagree with us, but I wouldnt support Iraq, Iran, N Korea or any podink tyrant who kills innocents.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said "the Iraqi issue should be resolved within the framework of the United Nations."

Fascinating times. Fascinating strategy. The Chinese will respect Bush, but will they also want him hamstrung? Be interesting to watch their contributions to the "resolutions".

China won't be a problem. They stayed on the sidelines diplomatically and militarily when we moved to take out the Taliban. I don't think it will be any different here.
