Iraq would be on the point of making a "significant advertisement" with UNO (diplomats)

Monday September 16, 2002 - 19h10 GMT

BAGHDAD, 16 seven (AFP) - Iraq would be on the point of making a "significant advertisement" with UNO in the next hours, relating to the question of the return of the inspectors in disarmament, one learned Monday from Western diplomatic source in Baghdad.

The advertisement would be made "in a few hours" in New York by the head of the Iraqi diplomacy Naji Sabri, according to the diplomatic source which affirmed that the declaration "in the good direction" would defuse the crisis on the disarmament of Iraq.

The international community multiplied these last days the calls to Iraq so that it authorizes the return of the inspectors in disarmament of UNO in order to avoid an attack which the United States threatens to launch to reverse the Iraqi mode, marked to develop weapons of massive destruction.

Iraqi president Saddam Hussein chaired Monday a meeting common of the direction of the Baas party (to the capacity) and government and examined with high Iraqi persons in charge the American threats for a military offensive against the country, according to official agency INA.

The agency affirmed that the participants in the common meeting "discussed certain political questions of topicality", without more precision.

Saddam Hussein moreover examined Monday afternoon "a series of questions relating to the current political economic situation", during a second meeting in presence in particular of the number two Iraqi Ezzat Ibrahim, the vice-president Taha Yassine Ramadan, the Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Aziz and Latif Nassif Jassem, member of the Council of command of the révolutionla higher leading authority of the country), according to INA.

Aide: Mr President, would you like to have the press in for a reaction to the Iraqi's "declaration."

President Bush: You bet. Have them meet me in the war room.

LOLOL sheesh............no, he's still among us!!

Perhaps I'm thinking of John Holliman (sp?) -- died in a car crash, I believe. One of the 'Baghdad Three' with Arnett and Bernard Shaw on the eve of the attacks, if I recall correctly.

Dear King; i would bet big money on further stalling. I agree with raven, and disagree with you. Having dealt with this culture for over 20 years, this is typical BS. They were backed into a corner by GWB and international community was piling on, so they conceded. The will "say" they will let inspectors in. That will buy them 2-4 months. then they will actually "schedule" a time for the inspectors to come, but that will be put off a minimum of 2, maybe 4 times, buying them another 3-6 months. they they may actually let an inspector in, but give him the run around so bad that the inspector leaves dazed and confused 3 months later, with no information at all. Saddam will have bought himself another 6-9 months, for us to arrive at the exact same place we are now. If we are going to take him out, do it NOW, and quit let him play us for a fool.
(he is laughing right now, cant you hear him?)

Isn't it utterly predictable that Iraq will agree to new inspections "in principle", and want to dialog endlessly with the UN on the details? Ever eager Koffi Annan will grasp this fig leaf and declare the "crisis" resolved. Saudi Arabia will have its excuse to deny the US use of our bases there (which they just granted today, but only if the UN is behind us). The appeasement party in Congress will seize on the same pretext to try to block military action against Saddam. The object of the exercise is to force Pres. Bush to go it alone, which is probably what he should have done in the first place, but now in seeming defiance of the UN and world opinion which will want to "respond to the Iraqi peace initiative."

It's not lost on Saddam that the congression votes of the DimRats almost prevented us from engaging Iraq in "The Mother of all Battles" a decade ago.

FYI...

September 13, 2002- A U.S. congressman headed to Iraq said Friday his trip could initiate a dialogue and avoid U.S. military action. Nick Rahall, a West Virginia Democrat, said he planned to propose a dialogue between the Iraqi National Assembly and U.S. legislators in a bid to cool the escalating tension between Iraq and the United States.

Rahall, who is of Lebanese descent, was scheduled to fly to Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, late on Friday with a delegation that includes former Sen. James Abourezk and Nick Solomon, who heads the Institute for Public Accuracy - a group of Washington-based analysts.[Note: the same group that sponsored Ritter's recent trip over there]

Or if he's really Machiavellian, he's going to try to gain the upper hand by being preemptive himself...

Something like...
Send as many aggressive inspectors as you have
We will impose no preconditions whatsoever
Tell them to pack for a long stay
We are going to grant them guest status

We are still 2 months away from being even close to launching any significant ground action. Air war this time won't get there. SoDumb's bunkers are even deeper and bigger than 12 years ago.
