Calif. Gov. Davis Stumps at Rally
Sunday October 20, 2002 5:20 AM
GARDENA, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis turned Saturday to one of the Democrats' most reliable allies for support, warning a union rally that Republican Bill Simon is a threat to organized labor and exhorting members to get out the vote.
``All the good work we have done and all the progress we have made is at risk, because my opponent does not agree with what we've done,'' Davis said at a labor rally and barbecue in Gardena, 15 miles south of Los Angeles.
Simon was campaigning 30 miles northeast, reaching beyond his GOP base with an address to Asian-American community leaders.
``The Asian community represents the very best of our state, and I respect the growing influence you must have in California's political system,'' Simon told guests invited by his campaign for an hourlong talk and question-an-answer session billed as an ``Asian Summit.''
After his appearance at the Local 250 hall of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Steamfitting and Refrigeration Industry, Davis bristled at questions about a corrupt former coastal commissioner.
The issue came up in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this month that cleared the way for release of former official Mark Nathanson's allegations about a decade-old bribery scandal.
Trying to cut a deal while on his way to prison in 1993 for orchestrating a $734,000 bribes-for-permits scheme, Nathanson claimed he had information about a state official who took part in the scheme. Prosecutors rejected the deal, dismissing Nathanson as a liar.
Nathanson named the official in two letters that were sealed by a federal judge, then made public in censored form. The Sacramento Bee has been fighting to get them released and the Supreme Court refused Oct. 7 to hear arguments to keep them closed, clearing the way for their release. It's unclear when that will happen.
The Bee and the San Francisco Chronicle have reported that sources believe the official Nathanson named was Davis.
Asked about that, Davis said, ``I'm not going to get into the back and forth.''
But Simon repeated his demands Saturday for Davis to disclose whether he was the official named.
Davis responded, ``This is the second totally false and reckless charge that's come out of the Simon campaign in the last 10 days,'' referring to a false accusation of illegal fund-raising Simon made against the governor earlier this month.
"I'm not going to get into the back and forth."
Now that puts it to rest! I have no doubt that Davis did nothing wrong...NOT!!!

Gray has been under a lot of pressure lately to defend against allegations of illegal fundraising practices. In the past, similar pressures put on the guv have caused him to explode in fits of rage....Davis is an unstable and violent man who has physically attacked a number of his employees over the years, throwing ashtrays and telephones, and shoving a long-time executive secretary so hard that the 62-year-old woman suffered a stress breakdown and was protected from the state from ever having to work in the same room with Davis again."(New Times Los Angeles, May 21, 1998)
The guvs volatile nature is legendary in certain circles. Last year the Sacramento Bee reported on a private meeting between Gray and Senate Republicans where he revealed his true colors.
A frustrated Gov. Gray Davis reportedly lost his temper Tuesday in a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans, delivering what one lawmaker called a symphony of obscenities . (Sacramento Bee, April 18, 2001)
A month later, Gray regressed into a temper tantrum over an article he found unfavorable, which sent him screaming down the street after a reporter.
Presumably, Governor Gray Davis was under a great deal of stress when he lost his cool in public on his way to a recent fund-raiser near the Capitol Spotting a Los Angeles Times reporter, Davis called out that his story in that days paper was a fing piece of bulls--t. He then got right in the reporters face, still cussing up a streak as blue as the hue of his favorite dress-shirt. (California Journal, May 2001)
For three years the guv has experienced meltdowns that would prompt a lesser man to take anger management courses. In fact Grays difficulty controlling his anger is so obvious that an editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle was titled, The Angry Governor.
And, yes, the governor was so angry about a one-page Chronicle story about his campaign contributions from industries with business pending at the state Capitol that his precise words would not be suitable for a family newspaper (Editorial, San Francisco Chronicle, July 21, 1999)
Sometimes his meltdowns cause him to blurt out absurdities that would be laughable, were they not coming from the governor of the fifth oops, make that sixth largest economy in the world.
But he balked at suggestions he release his appointment calendar Why dont you go to bed with me? Davis asked when disclosing the calendar was suggested. Why dont you move in? Youre not going to get it. Forget it. (Sacramento Bee, September 20, 2002)
Gray, before you unleash your inner angst on another reporter or your staff, take a deep breath and find your quiet place (hint: its not at a fund-raiser).
