The long awaited October 26 "anti-war" rally in Washington, D.C., organized by Ramsey Clark's organization "Act Now to Stop War and End Racism" featured the expected suspects — black radicals, disgruntled Arabs, white liberals, and communist college students. Al Sharpton demanded "regime change" in the White House, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney called Rush Limbaugh a draft-dodger, and Jesse Jackson demanded "moral clarity" (after announcing that he had fathered nineteen illegitimate Iraqi children in the backseat of a Mercedes).
Tens of thousands of protesters waved placards with such grotesque messages as "Axis of Evil: Bush, Cheney & Rummy," "Fascist Bush," and "No Blood for Oil." Muslim Zara Khan, leader of the City University of New York's (CUNY) Student Liberation Action Movement, kicked off the festivities by comparing the terrorist attacks of September 11 to tuition hikes:
On September 11, 2001, we lost our students to an act of terror and then we lost our students to immigrant tuition hikes, which are meant to terrorize immigrant communities in New York City. Today, the students of CUNY have come out here by the busload to protest this new low in U.S. imperialism, to protest this new low in the world's most inhumane foreign policy… We the people of conscience in the United States can call out a terrorist when we see him steal the presidency. We can call out a terrorist when we see his energy policies. And we can call out a terrorist when we see him struggling to make a case for the war in Iraq…I am not a citizen of the United States. I am proud to be a dissenting immigrant. Perhaps John Ashcroft should put Khan on his hit list. Perhaps CUNY trustees should ask why New York's taxpayers are currently funding Khan's education.
Outrageous statements were not just reserved for anti-American immigrants, however. Ramsey Clark, Attorney General under President Lyndon Johnson, compared the Bush Administration's foreign policy with the domestic terror advanced by Nazi Schutzstaffel Chief Heinrich Himmler:
We are destroying the United Nations, which was created to end the scourge of war. We are thumbing our nose at the Nuremberg charter, which stood, if anything, for [a policy of] 'you cannot strike first,' because Nazi Germany struck first time and time again. What did Heinrich Himmler tell the Gestapo? He said, 'Shoot first, ask questions later and I will protect you.' And that is what we plan to do with Iraq and other countries. After Iraq it will be more. If we don't stop this now, we'll find that we'll live in chaos for the rest of our lives and God knows what'll happen to the next generation. We're destroying the Constitution of the United States. Apparently, Clark really believes that there is no difference between Hitler's National Socialist government and the Bush Administration. This raises an important question — is he senile or just a lunatic?
Ramsey Clark then called for the impeachment, prosecution, and imprisonment of the President:
These [foreign policies] are criminal offenses, they are high crimes, they are indictable offenses, and they are impeachable offenses. I've lived with the Constitution as a lawyer for more than 50 years and if I know anything, these are impeachable offenses. An attack on Iraq will be genocide again. No anti-war protest could be complete without words of wisdom from Congressional Black Caucus Queen Cynthia McKinney. McKinney, who as Congresswoman wanted an investigation to see if George Bush had arranged 9/11 so that his business cronies could sell weapons to the Pentagon and was recently defeated in a Democratic primary due to her overt anti-Semitism, was obviously unbowed:
We know that when good men do nothing, evil triumphs. That is why we're here today so that it can never be said that we, the good people of the United States of America, did nothing in the face of evil. And sadly, even our own country is not the same as it used to be. The good old days are gone, but the bad old boys remain. The ex-congresswoman concluded with this potshot:
Let us remember, it is easy to talk about war if you have never been to war. George Bush, Dick Cheney, Richard Pearle, Paul Wolfowitz, Rush Limbaugh — where were you when your country needed you? If McKinney really wants to allow only current soldiers and former war veterans to vote on policy towards Iraq, I say let's go for it. There will be even stronger support for the war effort.
