MORGANTON - Authorities say a 41-year-old Burke County man assaulted his girlfriend, her mother and a neighbor until the girlfriend fought back -- shooting him in the buttocks.
Dwayne Fleming is held on $50,000 bond, charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor assault.
Fleming and his girlfriend, Tammy Gladden, had been arguing Wednesday morning at Fleming's home on Mill Race Road, south of Morganton, said Burke County Sheriff's Lt. John Suttle.
Gladden went to her mother's house nearby, Fleming followed, and in the ensuing argument Gladden was beaten and kicked in the stomach and face with heavy boots, prompting the felony assault charge, Suttle said. A neighbor and Gladden's mother tried to intervene, but were assaulted as well, he said.
Tammy Gladden then got a .38-caliber revolver from the house and shot Fleming once, Suttle said.
Gladden had not been charged by Wednesday evening, Suttle said, pending review by the District Attorney's office.
"They shot me directly in the buttocks."
