It's unbelievable that people who don't know about FOD,
and then are shown the evidence of its destructiveness,
then keep on claiming that FOD is a bogus issue.....

I never said it was a bogus issue.
I said that I doubted enough was done to catch the dog before the "Oh, heck, Bubba, let's keel it" mentality took over.
Don't make me post a cartoon........

I presume, then, that you are willing (and able) to pay the entire costs of shutting down the airport "long enough". Pleased to meet you, Mr. Gates.
I have worked on Air Force bases and flown in small planes. The Air Force policy is to do just that except in time of war of if it impeads a rescue operation. It really doesn't take that long for a vehicle to go out to the runway and chase the animal off. It's probably more dangerous to shoot the animal and have a bullet ricochet into an aircraft.

Re: post# 113. I don't know what the relevance is, but I think that comic was pretty funny. Thanks for the smile.

I would not like to see an animal sucked up into a jet engine, nor do I like to see an animal kill needlessly, on the other hand, if that was the only way to remove the hazard, I have no problem with that either.
I was answering the question, what do you think would happen if it was sucked up into the engine.

"The dog was not with a family."
Dogs flying on their own?

ROFLOL!! Good one.

As long as humans are safely on the ground it could take a year for all I care. No amount of money is worth that dogs life. Only human life is more valuable.
Oh, great. Another PETA flake. WOOF!

Two issues here - if I'm chasing a dog on the tarmack and it eludes me and starts heading towards the runway - 1) I'm not chasing it on foot out there and 2) I'm shooting it. ALL IN ALL, A WASTE OF TIME EVEN DISCUSSING THE MATTER
IT WAS A YIPPY DOG! (Or, in some circles of the PC Crowd, A Self-Assured Dog).
It's called the breaks of Naval Air!

it's the same people that make "Jackass," a masterpiece of cinematography, top all the rest at the box office. In my opinion that is the most bizarre thing so far this century.

>>Having been around C-5s alot, I can tell you that it is an unbelieveably powerful sucking machine.
An A-6 is a much smaller aircraft than a C-5. I have an ugly little video clip of an A-6 at night on a carrier deck, and the ingestion of one of the deck crew. Really nasty.
If that dog were ingested on the take-off roll, a lot of people could die.
To: Bush2000
no plane would be damaged if it DID hit the poor thing.
Uh, dude. Do you realize what happens to aircraft engines if dogs pass through them
Dude Do you relize what happens to a dog when he pass's a jet engine ?

So... uh... who shoots all of the squirrels that might jump out onto the runway? What about birds? bats? deer? any other form of wildlife? I'm not sure if it is airport employees who do this,or FAA employees. What I do know is that it is done. I see stories every once in a while about people complaining about geese and other birds being shot. Non-flying animals can be trapped and moved. This doesn't work with fliers.
Do they have rifle brigades set up to stop these dangerous intruders???
No,they use shotguns, although I'm almost positive there will be a scope-sighted rifle locked away somewhere at most airports.
To be honest,I'm shocked that there wasn't a tranquilizer gun around for emergencies like this.
To: RebelDawg
Or do you believe there is some barrier that keeps animals out? Yes. They call it a "high fence".
To: Skooz
FOD = Foreign Object Damage. Caused when a jet engine inhales a solid object. Also term used to describe any object on the ground in the vicinity of jet aircraft.
