EXCLUSIVE: MONDALE DROPS 7 POINTS AS POST-WELLSTONE MEMORIAL BACKLASH DEVELOPS

Plus: Exclusive internal GOP tracking poll numbers from key Senate and House races

By Joel C. Rosenberg, WORLD magazine contributor (www.worldmag.com) (WASHINGTON, 10/31/02) -- Just got off the phones with several top GOP Senate and House strategists. Fascinating developments.

Exclusive new poll numbers will soon be posted at www.worldmag.com and www.JewishWorldReview.com.

SENATE SNAPSHOT: MINNESOTA -- COLEMAN SURGES 7 POINTS AS MONDALE FACES INDEPENDENT BACKLASH

A political backlash against Walter Mondale is developing after Democrats turned the memorial service for Sen. Paul Wellstone into a campaign rally, WORLD magazine has learned.

Internal GOP tracking polls over the past week show Republican Norm Coleman gaining 7 points since Tuesday night and now in a statistical dead heat with Mondale, 43% to 42%

The first GOP poll taken last weekend when Mondale's name was first floated to replace Wellstone put the 74-year old Democrat ahead of Coleman by 3 points, highly-placed GOP sources say.

By the Tuesday before the memorial service, internal GOP polls show Mondale had climbed to a 7 point lead, and Republicans were deeply concerned they couldn't overcome the "Mondale Mystique." An independent, public poll showed Mondale up 8.

"Everything changed Tuesday night," said a top Republican operative. "The Democrats' political rally really turned off independent voters. It alientated [Minnesota Governor Jesse] Ventura. And we saw Coleman's numbers rise almost immediately, and intensity for Coleman has significantly increased."

What happened?

"Basically, we're back where we were when Wellstone was alive," the GOP source said. "Independent, undecided voters really didn't like Wellstone. Now they're looking cautiously at the guy who's filling in for the guy they didn't like."

President Bush will now campaign in Minnesota with Coleman on Sunday.

* GOP Rep. Jim Nussle in the 2nd Congressional district is also in a brutal battle against TK. But Nussle now seem to be closing the sale with voters. He's up 54% to 46%.

"Abnormally high," says one GOP operative. "We're watching it real closely. These could be serious fraud cases developing."

**************

HOUSE SNAPSHOT: GEORGIA

* Republican strategists fear a net loss of House seats in Georgia of one to four seats due to aggressive redistricting by Democrat governor and legislature.

the rally, er, memorial.

I think the term FUNERALLY that someone posted in another thread earlier seems appropriate.

Here's my call: The Wellstone memori-rally will indeed energize the Wellstone base. The problem for the RATS is that the hardcore Wellstone base isn't all that Democratic: They're greens.. Wellstone didn't really think like a RAT and certainly had too much integrity to be part of the RAT inner circle; in beliefs and deeds, he was more of a Green than anything else. He just ran as a Democrat because he know that no Green is ever going to get elected.

Well, now he's gone, and say what you will about Mondale, he's no ultra-left Green. Which means the big time Wellstone supporters are going to vote for whoever the Green candidate is, most of the independents are going to vote for Coleman because of their disgust with the DNC/DFL's actions, and a good chunk of the Democratic voters are either going to vote for Coleman or just not vote at all because they're embarrassed, humiliated and disgusted over what their party has become.

Result: Coleman win.

Cute. I also liked the one: "Rats, putting the 'fun' back in funeral!"

I am confused

Not only that you just proved you can't read.

Mondale was up by on saturday. But by the night of the memorial service he had risen to an 8 point lead.

The story says that the memorial he fell by 7 points to give Mondale a one point lead.

And for that, we as conservatives should feel blessed. The myth making and the romanticizing of Wellstone was shattered by the shrill shrieking of his strangly unmournful son's populist rallying cry.

This is who they are, this is who Wellstone was, and Minnesota is realizing that there is something wrong there.

I agree, that was literally an ol' fashoned church revival, and Liberalism is the religion! And, no matter what, for any reason or for all the money in the world, and what Demorcrats do not understand, REPUBLICANS COULD NEVER, NEVER HAVE DONE WHAT THEY DID AT THAT MEMORIAL...WE SIMPLY ARE NOT CAPABLE OF IT!

I'm an Iowa guy, so what type of fraud are we talking about, do these people not exist? Are they going to double vote; absantee AND at the polls? What exactly are we worried about? Open discussion for all FReepers PLEASE.

Say Big Joe,

I have been listening to WHO today and the Iowa GOP has just been pounding Norris with ads. As you no doubt know, Norris was Jesse Jackson's Iowa campaign manager. The airplay has been thick all day. Latham is safe.

A very well thought out analysis. I'm in MN and agree Coleman should win this. If he doesn't, nothing much more could be done to help him that hasn't already been done by the Dem's. If he doesn't take the Senate seat now then it was impossible to begin with, IMHO.
(Maybe I'm just rationalizing so I'm not totally devastated if he loses on Tues)

Thank you, but I can read quite well. I am still confused: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/778059/posts

This has Mondale up by 2 as of Sunday, not the three mentioned in the article. Moreover, the alleged internals which had Mondale surging on the night before the service were never released.

I support Coleman and have donated money to his campaign, but I am not so supportive that I will blindly accept leaked poll numbers at face value.
