That would be the biggest move ever. Hopefully the numbers work. You would have to replace the $$$ from somewhere. That is great b/c it would tax people fairly, AND cut down govt.My greatest concern? A NRST will be implemented, but they'll keep at least part of the income tax. And then the income tax will slowly creep back up. And we'll have the worst of BOTH worlds.
We're going to have to watch this sucker like a hawk.

I agree. To do this right we'll have to repeal the 16th amendment.

Dump the income tax and the IRS! Implement a national sales tax!
This allows the taxpayer the choice of deciding when and how much tax he is willing to pay. Also sets a natural limit on the tax and therefoe on the size of the federal government. When the taxpayer actually pays the tax out of his own pocket (as opposed to having it deducted from his paycheck) he feels it. It hurts! He will scream bloody murder when it hurts too much.
And, just as important in my book, it gets the government out of our personal affairs, as in, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated..."
The national sales tax eliminates the need for tax audits! Elimnate the IRS, Medicare and the Social Security TAX and get the federal government out of our lives!

Never will happen. And, I'm a CPA (not practicing anymore, so my job doesn't rely on the Internal Revenue Code).

I would not support a NRST without the repeal of the 16th amendment.

Sales tax AND income tax? Can you say 'Canada'?
To: dirtboy
Also, they feds will have to ban cash transactions to implement a NRST. Otherwise, I might sell you my car, house, or airplane for cash.

True, no man's life liberty or property are safe as long as Congress is in session - Will Rogers
I'll take the risk, a few decades of lower, simpler taxes would be worth it all by itself...

Or....they don't put a cap on the sales tax.
With only a super-majority being able to raise the rate.

No NRST until a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT REPEALING the 16th amdnement i spassed. It could set the date the 16th and Income tax are abolished (x months after adoption by the states).
You are correct absent a repeal of the 16th amendment we will end up with both. The rat sponsors of HR 2525(?) understand this.
A Flat Tax would be the best solution under the current POLITICAL situation.

Very astute! Legislation will have to be most specific so we're not sliding down two slopes instead of one. The national sales tax rate can also be increased. In principle, at first glance, the idea seems good. But it could end up a double nightmare.

Hi dirtboy: H.R. 2525, The Fair Tax Act of 2001 sets in motion the repeal of the 16th Amendment concurrent with enactment of the FairTax.
BTW, the 16th Amendment did not require/mandate an Income Tax. It permitted one if Congress so voted to have one... which they did in 1913.
Congress created the Income Tax and Congress can un-create it by passing the FairTax and repealing the 16th Amendment.
When we turn-up the HEAT on Congress high enough, they will see the LIGHT!
IOW, we need to make it clear to our CongressCritters that either they will enact the FairTax or their replacements will.
Visit FairTax Facts! and read all about the FairTax (HR 2525) in easy to understand "layman's language."
Also, visit: FairTax SUMMARY! for a bit of history about taxation.
