(11/05/02) -- On Monday, the Teamsters union vowed they would shut down two Rolling Stones concerts this weekend at Pacific Bell Park (Home of San Francisco Giants) if the promoter, Clear Channel Communications, does not use union workers. William Cromartie, the president of the Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 85, said that the Teamsters have had a gripe with Clear Channel for years: "They want to bring in kids to work for $6 or $7 an hour and give then a T-shirt." Nearly 50 Teamsters were picketing outside the stadium as trailers arrived to deliver equipment for the Friday and Saturday shows. Sherry Wasserman, the spokeswoman for promoter Bill Graham Presents, conveyed that the Teamsters have wanted to take part in the local events for quite awhile: They are using this high-profile show to strong-arm us." San Francisco better hope they resolve this issue before one of the greatest bands of all time hits the stage

Does anyone care?
To: Old Professer
Obviously... I do.
The union is trying to take away a few bucks and some great memories from kids...doesn't that make you mad?

Well...I can't say for sure
BUT
It seems that BGP, a completely SLIMEY and limosine liberal organization is slapping the face of the Teamsters who move the stuff around...
AND
BGP will hire ILLEGAL ALIENS (not college students) to move the stuff for $6-$7 an hour ....
Therein lies the unstated crux of the thing. Hire illegals (which would be politically correct here) for a non-living wage (un pc), or hire the Teamsters (PC) but much more, but they are American born....
To: I_Love_My_Husband
Well..I don't know who the BPG is....but whoever is running that show should be able to hire who they want..not be threatened and strong armed by the teamsters...Like crybabies, they 'threatened' to close the show.
I don't care if they hire monkeys and dogs....it's their business.

"They want to bring in kids to work for $6 or $7 an hour and give then a T-shirt." Rather than pay laughably exorbitant amounts of money to privilege-monkeys who will probably do a lousier job than the kids? What's this country coming to?
To: Sungirl
Da Mayor(Willie Brown) worked out an agreement between Bill Graham Presents and the Teamsters for that venue only. The shows went on.
To: RGSpincich
Thanks....I wonder how much the teamsters made this company pay them. Reminds me of crooked police telling store owners that if they don't pay them something under the table, there store won't be on their 'route'.

Something tells me those kids would rather get their 6 or 7 dollars an hour than have a union worker get 50 while they get zero, nada, zilch.

Unions = La Cosa Nostra
To: Sungirl
Geez, $6 to $7 an hour is pretty good for walking in a straight line and unfolding/folding chairs...

Some Freepers may not like unions but they serve a purpose in America.

...some great memories from kids...Don't fool yourself. Half the crowd will be old hippies with their glasses on reflecting the flame from their lighters in the dark.

Speaking as a Teamster, local 38, I don't care at all.
for old time's sake, I'll sign off once more this way.
Another Teamster for Impeachment and Chemical Castration.

Who would you hire if it was your show? I am going to guess the union job would pay $15.00 hr...plus overtime?

Some Freepers may not like unions but they serve a purpose in America.By illegally shutting down an event?
To: Bogey780
The Unions are trying to protect thier jobs. Some Freepers may not like unions but they serve a purpose in America. I have Union Printing done for my business.
The Union "Bug", (Allied Printing Trades Council logo) offends no one, and lets my union customers know I support them. Here's why:
If, on my product, I have American Flag decals, and "Made in USA", then it would be hypocritical if I used Illegals.
If I cannot afford to hire my neighbors, then what am I running a business for?
Sure, we know all about some union's ties to ..umm..you know. But the same can be said for my Town Government, etc..etc.
Granted, on first reading, it looked like a bald example of extortion, and it may well have been. But there are unions and there are unions.
