AP Breaking News ^ | 2 December 2002

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Boy Scout leader faces charges that he fondled at least three members of his troop and showed them gay pornographic photos, police said. Robert King, 50, was held in Brevard County Jail on $75,000 bail Sunday after police charged him with lewd and lascivious molestation and exposure of sexual organs. King, who is married, confessed that exposed himself and showed the troop members pornography, Titusville police spokesman John Lau said.

Lau said King invited at least five boys to his home on Friday under the guise of preparing to build a Christmas float. The boys ranged in age from 10 to 12. Police became involved after at least one scout's parents learned of the incident Friday evening. King was arrested Saturday and appeared in court Sunday. The Central Florida Boy Scouts Council is investigating the case, district executive Kevin Litt said. Last month, the Boy Scouts of America announced that it would require criminal background checks of new adult volunteers beginning next year.

Reports like these, which are relatively rare concerning Scout leaders, validate the position of the Boy Scouts to remove all homosexual adult leaders from their ranks. It also validates the decision of the US Supreme Court in Dale v. Boy Scouts to uphold the First Amendment (freedom of association) rights of the Scouts to do exactly that.

And it also proves that all who attack the Scouts for exercising their constitutional rights are willing to play sexual roulette with other people's children. Those who object to the Scouts' removing homosexual leaders are welcome to create their own organization which provides "scouting" opportunities but does welcome homosexual leaders. Let's see how many parents wich to entrust their children into the "care" of an organization like that.

"A Scout is trustworthly, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, thifty, obedient, cheerful, brave, clean and reverent." That's not a bad set of standards for a boy to aspire to. It's not a bad set for a man. Heck, it's not a bad set for a politician or two.

I note for the record that among leadership positions -- ranging from officers in the military, to astronauts, to Congressman (yes, Congressmen), Eagle Scouts are far more prevalent than their numbers in the general population. Maybe, just maybe, the Scout program IS a good way to raise children.

Here's another news source reporting:

(Note: the scout leader's wife *was home*. Note, too: one of the boys *walked home* in the middle of the night!! I feel odd saying so, but I guess I am thankful to God for the lack of supervision.)(....sigh....)

Scout leader faces sex charges

TITUSVILLE -- A Boy Scout leader was being held at the Brevard County Jail on Sunday after several boys complained that he had exposed himself at a sleepover, showed them computer pornography and asked for sexual favors, police said.

Robert Leroy King, 50, was arrested Saturday on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation and exposure of sexual organs, jail officials said. At least three boys, ages 10 to 12, were sleeping over at his Titusville home Friday night because they planned to work together on a Christmas float Saturday, Titusville Sgt. John Lau, said.

One of the boys walked home during the night and told his parents, who contacted police. Two other boys at the sleepover complained shortly thereafter, and two more boys have come forward since, Lau said.

Investigators don't know yet whether the last two boys were at the sleepover or if their allegations stem from separate incidents.

A judge set bail for King, whose wife was home during the sleepover, at $75,000.

"Last month, the Boy Scouts of America announced that it would require criminal background checks of new adult volunteers beginning next year."

Excuse me, but this example of shining journalistic achievement, presumably from the socialist-leaning Columbia School of Journalism, has missed the boat. If homosexuality is "normal" and no aspect of the behavior is illegal, then how the H-LL would a background check find a homosexual much less ascertain the deviant's proclivity toward molestation of boys?

I am guessing that the only way to detect these deviants is as follows:

(1) Interview them carefully as regards lifestyle and have them pledge and sign a document stating that they are not homosexual and have no designs on boys.

(2) Instruct the boys that anytime a scoutmaster or leader acts sexually toward them, in the slightest fashion, they are to report it immediately.

(3) Have each scoutmaster agree by contract, in advance, to the civil penalties they will incur (e.g., big-time $$) in addition to criminal prosecution should they so much as fondle a boy.

Such draconian measures are a deterrent, of course, intended to make the lonely pervert look elsewhere and decide to do something else with this time.

What a sad state of affairs in our nation such that it comes to this. I grieve for all of us and for our great country and Western civilization.

Mr. Slippy Fist strikes again!

Remember the gay motto..."They're all pink on the inside"! (Works for the RCC as well, it seems...)

Tell me again how we need to be Diverse and Tolerant of these destructive deviants?

Here is the letter I just sent to the NECIS organization. I urge everyone to do likewise.

To whom it may concern,

From your own site:

Our Mission:

NECIS is a grassroots organization based in New Hampshire that is dedicated to fostering discussion and education about the current state of the scouting program in the United States. It was formed in response to the discriminatory practices of the Boy Scouts of America with respect to religion and sexual orientation, and comprises individuals and organizations who want to find ways to both support the scouting program, and to make the benefits that scouting has to offer equally available to all youth.

...How should we respond when an outstanding organization does something terribly wrong? Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court gave the Boy Scouts of America the right to ban gays from their organization (BSA v. Dale). Just because an action is legal, however, does not mean that it is morally right. We believe that the leadership of the BSA is doing a double disservice to our youth when they deny wonderful opportunities to some while teaching harmful lessons of divisiveness and discrimination to the millions that remain in the program.

Do you know something we don't? Please drop us a line: info@inclusivescouting.net

So, I am "dropping you a line".

I have been a scout leader for well over 20 years. I was involved in scouting as a youth and my to sons are both scouts. There is not a finer organization for America's young men.

You state that the scouts are "discriminating", doing "something terribly wrong" and at the same time that you want the benefits of scouting available to all.

What you refuse or fail to see is that a big part of the benefits are that scouting teaches a young man to be morally straight and to believe in and trust in God. Those words, and oaths, mean something. They mean that there is right and wrong in the world and in life and scouting teaches very straight forwardly about it.

The gay and lesbian, or homosexual, lifestyle is not morally straight. It is the antithesis of that. To have a leader who practices that lifestyle teach the boys is the antithesis of the scout oath and law, and would expose the boys to great risk ... irrespective of whatever spin or studies you may care to quote. We prefer old fashioned common sense ... or horse-sense.

In addition, as Patrick Henry said, "there is a God in Heaven". It is Him who we try and teach young men to please. That is another foundational principle and the very essence of what the Boy Scouts teach. To have someone who does not believe in God lead scouts is again the very antithesis of scouting.

The "terrible wrong" that is being perpetrated here is by those people and organizations who would force scouting to recount its basic principles and move away from them. What such organizations are attempting and proposing is intolerance at its worst. Scouting does not teach that others should not be tolerated ... it teaches boys that there are better choices they can make that will improve their lives and those of the people around them.

An effort to eradicate or force scouting away from this goal is simply not going to happen. If it ever does, scouting will cease to exist, because myself and millions like me will cease to work for the organization and will form another that continues to teach those same principles with the same restrictions.

I know my church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is the largest supporter of the BSA, would pull out immediately and would institute a program, already ready and waiting in the wings, to teach these fundamental and critical principles. A fundamental belief and adherence to such principles is part of the reason our nation ... or any nation ... remains strong over any extended period.

If you do not like this ... if you feel it is so terribly wrong ... then start your own organization that teaches something different. We would not stand in your way or try and force you to adopt ours. Do not for an instant presume you will be able to force us to adopt your or other ways of thinking in this regard on these critical issues. There are fundamental truths and principles that are not open to spin, debate or compromise. You are touching on them.

Sincerely,

Jeff Head
Emmett, ID

These people are either unwitting useful idiots (and some of them are certainly that), or they are continuing to move with a will to subvert and destroy the basic underlying fabric of our Republic and liberty. Many are of the latter variety. I teach scouts about them both.

Your number 2 is SOP for scouts starting as young as 6 years old.

Doing a background check would at least weed out second offenders. For a guy 50 to have this be his first time would be unussual.

The real question is where is the wife ? She must have her head in the sand.

It's impossible to say what she knew and when she knew it. It's not the point, though.

People cry "Ban gays... ban gays... ban gays..." as if that's going to fix the problem, and it isn't. Too many molestors are invisible: fine, upstanding, righteous citizens in public, to society, and even to their families, but looking to diddle the child the first opportunity they get.

These boys were taught right -- they told. One even walked home in the middle of the night.

I wish we heard about more children that were smart enough to get away from even someone "trusted" and heard less finger-pointing.

Using your logic, I shouldn't ban convicted child molesters because it wouldn't prevent children from getting molested.

Who said keeping male gays away from male children is going to solve the molestation problem ? We are talking about reducing risks. I wouldn't let my daughter on an overnight camping trip with a male anymore than I would want my son on any overnight with a gay. I cannot control every risk but at least I can manage risks and letting my sons go camping with gay leaders is an extra risk that makes no sense to me.

The fact that this guy was married doesn;t mean he isn't gay. (which is obvious now). And the banning of gays as leaders will still reduce the incidents of these things happening.

You know the Boy Scouts could allow homosexual scout leaders so long as they openly admit their choice (rather than delude parents into thinking they uphold BSA moral values) then, let the parents choose which scout leader they want their child to have. Free choice of association. I know the public schools won't let you choose your teacher (for obvious reasons) but a private organization like the BSA might consider this option. If a parent chooses a homosexual leader and the boy is molested, then they are at least culpable for exposing their child to an adult with this propensity for sin.

Aside from my silly rant (I don't have any sons) I'll be praying for the wife and kids of the man who did the molesting. What an awful thing to occur. I'm sure she's devistated and the kid's are confused. Can you imagine the call she got from the police station? What a dad! He single handedly let his sexual fantasies destroy his family.

The Adult Application does have spaces to fill in 3 character references. However, the local Council rarely checks them. The unit sponsor is supposed to check them. In fact, the unit is supposed to know who the person is and vouch for their character. However, in real life the sponsors usually think that their obligation to the unit stops at providing them with a meeting space. And most BSA units are so desperate for volunteers that they'll take anybody who seems to show a genuine interest, especially if they are a parent.

Note to parents:

BSA does not stand for "Baby Sitters of America". If you are not showing up for Scouting activities once in a while, and if you are not making sure that there are parents present at all Scouting functions, then you are not fulfilling your obligation as a parent.

The BSA itself says that it's stand against homosexual leaders is because they believe that homosexuality provides an unfit moral example, and specifically not because they think that homosexuals are more likely to be child molesters. See this page from the BSA's own web site, where you see this quote:

FICTION

The Boy Scouts of America has chosen to exclude avowed homosexuals from the ranks of its members and leaders because of a fear of pedophilia.

FACT

The BSA does not equate homosexuality and pedophilia, but neither avowed homosexuals nor pedophiles are appropriate role models for Scouting youth.
