Louisiana Senate race a dead heat

12/06/2002

Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. - Heading into Saturday's runoff election, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., holds a slight edge over Republican challenger Suzanne Haik Terrell, according to a new poll.

But the race is still too close to call, according to the survey taken this week for Louisiana's Gannett newspapers by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research of Columbia, Md.

The poll of 625 registered voters, taken Monday and Tuesday nights, showed Ms. Landrieu favored by 47 percent of those polled and Ms. Terrell favored by 45 percent. Eight percent were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. That amounts to a dead heat, said pollster Brad Coker, owner of Mason-Dixon.

I would call this good news. "Registered" voters are not the same as "likely" voters. "Likely" voters seem to always break for "Pubbies".

A Landrieu loss should motivate the RATS to abandon the clinton/mcauliffe/carville/begalla scorched-earth perpetually-negative hack team.

It won't, but it should.

Great title for this post "DEAD HEAT."

I think it shows that Landrieu is still way ahead with the Dead Voters of LA. This election is a "Must Steal Deal" for the Democrats.

I hope the RNC has got its chickensalad detector on "Full," and is ready to start the Mother of ALl Lawsuits.

NO MORE FRAUD

The 47-45 poll is phony. The tracking poll taken after Bush's visit showed Terrell ahead 49-46, with the rest undecided. All the energy here is with Terrell. Ralph Reed is here and the Conservative Evangelicals and Catholics are very energized. Acc. to the Times Picayune this AM, they are using the same GOTV operation that Reed so successfully emplyed in Georgia. The President is on TV every 30 minutes or so saying "For the good of everybody in Louisina Suzie Terrell needs to be the next United States Senator." It's a great ad. I think this race is very much under control.

Here's the slant. Blacks represent 28% of registered voters here in Louisiana. This poll appears to be weighted to reflect a similar turnout. Unfortunately for Ms. Landreau, the highest turnout ever of black voters, represented 26% of the voters and that was when David Duke (x? KKK) ran for Governor.

A decent turnout of blacks this election would be 24-25%. I personally believe that black voter turnout will be around 19%, but about 10% of them will vote 3-4 times in certain areas of New Orleans. (Not trying to be funny here)

I believe if we had one man one vote here in Louisiana, Terrell would win 60% to 40%. However, even with the anticipated voter fraud, Terrell will win 53-47 +/-

By the way, come down here and call my home Lousy to my face. Otherwise, I believe you owe me and my neighbors an apology.

Several days ago, I posted on FR that Ms Terrell will have 54.57% of the vote cast, and since all spoiled and written-in ballots will be discarded, that leaves Ms Landrieu with exactly 45.43%.

This still remains very close to the outcome, and will remain my exact prediction.

I find the 90% confidence interval is that the Terrell vote will be between 53.6% and 55.0% of the vote cast. The 95% confidence interval is between 52.9% and 57.2% of the vote cast, and the 99% CI is between 49.9% and 58.3% of the vote cast.

Due to heroic effort by Dems, we are now looking at a black voter turnout of 21.6% of all votes cast, with whites at 74.8% and Hispanics, Asians and others at 3.6%.

I had earlier predicted that Terrell would carry the Orleans parish by a hairbreadth, but the higher black turnout [to include just 4500 to 8000 outright fraudulent votes, compared with three or four TIMES that in 1996] is now putting Terrell at some 45.2% in that parish: this is still very good for a Republican and may be a record for Senator, Governor, or President for Reps. in that parish.

I also show black voting FOR Terrell to be at a record for any other high visibility race in the last generation-- with some 17% of blacks, more in Orleans, backing the Republican.

This is a roadmap for much more GOP success in the next few elections, and not just in the deep South!
