Gore in Funding Flap in Red China: Ambassador Holbrooke Defends Ex-V.P.
NY SUN ^ | 12/6/02 | TIMOTHY STARKS

WASHINGTON - Just as Vice President Gore is reappearing on the American political scene, a recent trip to Asia is prompting questions about a fund-raising flap like the ones that followed him after the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign. Mr. Gore visited Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China, last month for a forum focused on the nation’s entry into the World Trade Organization. Conference participants had the opportunity to have their photos taken with Mr. Gore in exchange for cash, the South China Morning Post reported.

The sponsor of the event at the top of the list on the forum Web site, the China Development Institute, operates under the approval of the communist Chinese government. Also while abroad, Mr. Gore attended an Asia Society Hong Kong event hosted by former Enron director Ronnie Chan Chi-chung.

The report evokes memories for some of the 1996 Buddhist Temple fundraising scandal in Los Angeles, not to mention the allegations of money funneled to the Democratic Party by the Chinese government. Mr. Gore has said he will soon announce whether he intends to run for president again in 2004.

“If this is true, it’s a pretty severe lapse in judgment,” a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, Dan Ronayne, said when contacted by The New York Sun. “It’s mildly shocking that he’d put himself in a position for this kind of potential embarrassment.”

The Gore camp insists the former vice president and 2000 presidential candidate has done nothing wrong, and disputes the accuracy of the report.

A former American ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, also came to Mr. Gore’s defense.

“We were not paid in any way for any photographs,” a spokesman for Mr. Gore, Jano Cabrera, said.

“We’re aware of no one who paid to have photos taken with Mr. Gore. If they did, they did so without our permission.”

The South China Morning Post did not specify who had offered the pictures-for-cash deal to forum participants. It listed the price as 50,000 yuan — about $6,000 — or 100,000 yuan for “conference sponsorship packages.”

Mr. Cabrera said the event was a BusinessWeek forum, in conjunction with another conference sponsor, DnmStrategies.

It was not, as alleged by the vice-chairman in Hong Kong of Republicans Abroad, hosted by a “communist think tank” — that is, the China Development Institute.

But on that point, the spokesman for Mr. Gore and a spokeswoman for Business Week do not agree.

“The forum was not put on by BusinessWeek. The primary sponsor and organizer was the China Development Institute,” the spokeswoman, Nancy Sheed, said.

“We were there as a sponsor, in the form of signs and logos. We did not pay for any of the speakers or participants to be there.”

Mr. Cabrera said the Washington Speaker’s Bureau paid Mr. Gore for his appearance, but would not disclose the amount.

To prove his point, he gave the Sun a contract regarding the appearance that lists the client as “DnmStrategies For Service to BusinessWeek.”

The South China Morning Post quoted an unnamed Asia Society source as saying that Mr. Chan, the former Enron director, hosted the Asia Society meeting.

The chief executive of DnmStrategies, Sam Moon, told the paper Mr. Gore was aware of who Mr. Chan was “because I told him before we went into it [the lunch.]”

Mr. Cabrera said Mr. Gore had no advance knowledge of who Mr. Chan was; he said it was as innocent as giving a speech to an audience that contained an Enron executive.

Throughout his trip, Mr. Gore brought the message of open trade and human rights, Mr. Cabrera said.

Mr. Gore got involved when Mr. Holbrooke invited him to the meet with the Asia Society, Mr. Cabrera said.

“We are grateful that Vice President Gore took the time to speak to the Asia Society Hong Kong. The Asia Society is the leading non profit, non-governmental organization in the United States concerned with Asia, and we are proud that Ronnie Chan is a Member of the Board and the leader of our activities in Hong Kong,” Mr. Holbrooke said in a statement.

“To suggest that Vice President Gore’s activities in Hong Kong was somehow improper because he visited China during his trip — as has every president since Richard Nixon — is ridiculous and smacks of old school McCarthyism.”

Algore lives in "Wannabe Land." He introduces himself as the man who would have been president or something equally idiotic. Of course, he knows if the Dem vote fraud operated like it did when the Clintons got elected he woulda been prez.

I agree. If anyone is stupid enough to pay me $20k (heck I'll take $1k) to have a photograph with me, I'm willing to take their money.

It ain't illegal to accept money from fools. Heck even conventional American/Christian morality codes as I understand them say its okay.

To take money from CHICOMS is all the better as it means less money in their hands to do bad things.

"To take money from CHICOMS is all the better as it means less money in their hands to do bad things."

Talking of "bad things" don't forget China-gate and the '96 election when Bill Clinton and the DNC wrapped his candidancy in Zillions of dollars courtesy of the Red Chinese!

This Gore/China trip is very revealing. Just last week, Al Gore was slamming the American People for voting GOP in the last election and Gore and Daschele were holding hands while accusing Rush Limbaugh and certain conservative newspapers of being a "Fifth Column" in the USA!! And now Gore goes to shake hands and collect money from CHINA???

If you haven't noticed, Gore is Hillary's mouthpiece these days. Saying what Hillary longs to say. Doing what Hillary longs to do! She can't RISK messing up her Presidential chances right now, so....

Al Gore IS Hillary right now.

Why? The Clinton's have let Gore believe that if he's a "good boy" they'll save a place for him in paradise so Gore is being used to aid the Clintons. And if that includes going to Red China for some more suitcases full of cash...that's what Al will do!

You got that a little wrong. AlGore was taking money from the Chicoms when he was in the senate. HE INTRODUCED THE BIG C TO THE CHICOMS, not the other way around.

If they did, they did so without our permission.

Permission? Oh yeah. In China you have to have permission.

Sorta lets you know who's in charge.

So that's why Al Gore has been "kept" by the Clintons!

RED CHINA knows that POWER lies with the Clinton/Rodham team, not Al Gore.

Of course Al Gore is being used by the Clintons. The Clintons use and then destroy anybody of power hungry status to benefit them till there is nobody left to use, abuse and destroy. The Clintons are nothing but a bunch of vamps running wild and loose. Look how they trashed the White House. Just trashed the place. That includes Gore too!

Long ago I realized that Gore was actually worse in some ways... my simplistic reasoning?

Clinton was born corrupt & criminal... Al actually started as a fairly conservative Southern Democrat, and became corrupted in the process.

Nothing worse than a formerly honest man who got turned to the dark.

Yes, dark indeed! Criminal in fact! (quite typical of most Democrats)

It's ridiculous that celebrities, professional athletes, wayward CEOs, superintendents, college presidents and college coaches make as much money as they do.

Not a one of them endures a tenth the risk or effort that our soldiers, police officers or firefighters accept each day. Why, a collectively stupid society appreciates the former group and takes the second group for granted.

If Americans refused to spend $7.50 a movie ticket and $30+ for a nose-bleed stadium seat, celebrities and jocks would make much less. If boards were more concerned about actual qualifications and potential in their CEOs rather than desperately bidding for and begging for the "big names", CEOs would make a lot less. The same can be said of the others.

It's all supply and demand.

I look at all three of them as white trash! They give us Americans a very bad image in Europe and the Middle East. If one cannot be loyal to one's own Country, what makes them think they will be loyal to the enemy when the enemy takes over? The key is that one must know their enemy. For example, look what the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Justice Reinhquist just ruled today that we don't have a right to keep and bear arms. This Judge should be immediately removed from the bench and charged with sedition against the United States. To make such an outrageous ruling shows contempt for the Constitution. The right to keep and bear arms is an individual right...not a collective one and certainly not a privilege. To those who are willing to relinquish this right for the sake of "security" deserve neither rights nor freedom! If Gore runs for office, the right to keep and bears arms is one thing he hopes to make disappear. That is why he lost in the 2000 election! And believe me, he'll lose again as long as those like myself and others support the 2nd Amendment.

Please excuse the error but that should be Judge Reinhardt. I somehow got the names confused.
