DNC Chair Calls on President Bush to Denounce Trent Lott's Comments on Race [Dream on, Terry Mac!]

The Macker [DNC Chair McAuliffe] was due to add the following comments this morning at the Presidential Primary 'Politcs and Eggs' breakfast in Beford, New Hampshire.

'Given this pattern, [of Lott's repeated racial statements] it is simply not credible for Senator Lott to continue to assert that the comments that he made in support of Senator Thurmond's segregationist campaign were anything more 'than a poor choice of words.'

Sadly, it would rather appear that these comments reflect Senator Lott's true prejudices on race.'

'The time has come for leaders of the Republican Party to speak out against Senator Lott's remarks.

I call on George Bush and Marc Racicot Chairman of the Republican Party, to denounce Senator Lott's comments..'

'Likewise I join incoming Congressional Black Caucus Chair Representative Elijah Cummings is expressing concern with Senator Lott's fitness to serve as leader of the United States Senate.'

"Trent Lott doesn’t need to resign because of his bordering-on-idiotic remarks at Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday party. He needs to be kicked out. The Senate Republicans need to step in and make it crystal clear that Trent Lott is no longer needed in a leadership role in the United States Senate.

It’s happened twice now, not just once. The first time was about 20 years ago, then again last week. Trent Lott telling an audience that if Strom Thurmond had been elected in 1948 we wouldn’t have had all these problems we’ve been having.

Look … Thurmond’s candidacy in 1948 was about one thing. One thing only. It was all about opposition to Truman’s civil rights agenda. It was a “segregation forever” campaign. The only issue. So, when someone says that a Thurmond victory would have prevented problems, the only rational inference that can be drawn is that the problems being spoken of are the problems associated with integration … problems associated with the actual realization of the implementation of our Constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law.

Lott’s apology was so weak. Both of them were weak. Somehow he just couldn’t bring himself to say that the platform of the Dixiecrat Party in 1948 was anti-American and an abomination to our Constitution. He just couldn’t bring himself to say that each and every citizen in our country is entitled to equal protection under our laws, and that the legacy of segregation is a point of shame, not a point of celebration.

There are many fine Republicans in the U.S. Senate who could serve as the Senate Majority Leader without the racial baggage. The bulk of the Republican agenda carries favorable implications for black Americans .. but how in the hell does the party expect to attract black members and voters with Trent Lott drawling on and on about what a good president Strom Thurmond would have made?"

Seems like all the liberals can do is lie in wait for a conservative to make a mistake so they can pretend like they are oh so offended and can take off on a "Magical Mystery Victim Tour" to display their "wounds" for all to admire and sympathize with.

why is everybody so dern sure that Lott was referring only to race when he said that things would be better had Thurmond won?

Well camle... the reason for being for the dixiecrats was to protest integration. They were segregationists, and proud of it. That was their only major issue in 1948. It wasn't the capital gains tax cut, it wasn't abortion, the second amendment, free trade, the earned income tax credit... it was segregation. Period.

I don't see how Lott could be confused about this.

The real thing to remember about all this crapola is that nobody from Jessie Jackson to AlGore to Terry Mac is remotely outraged about this. The funny thing is that most conservatives would like to see Lott gone a lot more than anybody on the left does. The sad thing is that the left seems perfectly happy starting a race war if they think it will get them power.
