It is going to be so silly. Soon Lott will give exclusives to Jet magazine, and then go on Oprah and cry.

This would have been over by Tuesday if Lott said segregation was wrong, racism is wrong. My statements implied it, it was distasteful, I apologize. The end.

Instead he sent his PR flack out first with an outraged response. Then sent a I am sorry if you are offended you jackass response. Then 2 radio interviews, now this. It is almost like a soap opera. I am being entertained, but saddened that Lott is such an idiot. Forget a white sheet, he should be wearing a dunce cap on his head.

Next thing you know, Trent will do a duet with Stevie Wonder on "Ebony and Ivory" and release the CD in time for Martin Luther King Day.

Isn't it nice how the Republicans ALWAYS eat their own when there's ever any whiff of a potential problem. We ditch our relationships, apparently, to prevent any of it from rubbing off on the rest of us.

Conversely, the Democrats always rally around their members whenever there's a scandal.

That's one reason we're always accused of being ineffective.

Does he really need to keep dragging this out?

He's not the one dragging this out. A-holes in Congress and the media keep badgering him about it. if the first heart-felt apology wasn't good enough for them, he should tell them to all go ef themselves. Maybe he should tell them that if Clinton didn't have to resign for misconduct in the Oval Office, then he sure as heck wouldn't resign his post for having his words misinterpreted.

I've not heard what "all these problems" means, but a go slow approach to segregation/integration might have prevented "all these problems" we have with the welfare state. Maybe if the races were kept separate for a little while longer, the black middle class might have had a chance to flourish and families could have passed the work ethic and a respect for education on to the next generation. Instead we have problems with people who don't want to work and expect the government to provide their every need. That's what I think "all these problems" means.

So then the only difference between us and them is our philosphy of economics and abortion.

We both protect scumbags as long as they are "our" scumbags.

OK day for being a republican but a sad day for consevatives.

As a follow-up, one of the best Congressmen we've had in generations was forced out when we wouldn't stand behind him. The House still hasn't recovered from forcing out Newt Gingrich.

Be annoyed all you want. His comments were reprehensible. He should resign as Majority Leader. Integrity is more important than what the Left thinks.

By next week he'll be knocking on individual doors and tendering personal apologies to each black person in the U.S.

That's why I'm taking off next week and staying home.

I have a dream... Hollings Byrd Clinton Kennedy Lott Helms out of the senate. I am sick of the a-holes on both sides. Racists the whole lot of them. I would dump them all out on an island survivor style along with Bob Dornan Maxine Waters and some other obnoxious congress critters, and each week, they vote on which one will get drowned. The final survivor has to beat the other to death to win... then we lie to that person and drown them too.

But that is just me.

"The Trent Lott Apology World Tour 2002-2003' headed to a venue near you!"

The bad news is, that tour will last for at least two more years. Lot's pennance will be to lead the Republicans to vote for every morsel of pork the Black Caucus wants or that the Dims threaten him with. Having him there opens the Senate Republicans up to blackmail, just to save his stupid rear end. He isn't worth saving. This is a wonderful time to get rid of him.

Actually, I think Lott should resign. Not because of this nonsense, but because he makes a lousy Majority Leader. He's far too accomodating to the Democrats. I want somebody who'll tell the Bob Byrds and the Ted Kennedys to go soak their heads.

Forgive him fine...does not excuse his behavior though. There are consequences for everything. The man should not lead...let him retain his seat...but not lead.

He said what he meant...it came from his heart...it was not the first time the man has gotten into trouble over stuff like this.

Those who continue to support him do the party no good...but lots of harm.

This was the worst week for the President since before 9-11.

The commonality I see in the Lott, Law, Mitchell and Kissinger fiascos is the notion that high office is one's private property. I think this reflects the negative change in the culture toward the philosophy: what's mine is mine; screw my responsibility to anybody else. Our founding fathers regarded high office as a privilege. One made their living doing something else.

Two factors are likely to determine whether Bush has a second term: the economy and Iraq. I attribute the weak economy to the lingering effect of 9-11. To get the economy growing fast enough to create jobs, Congress is going to have pass a series of supply side measures. The Speaker and Senate Majority Leader are the President's point men in this effort. If he stays, Lott's going to have substantial visibility.

Lott's self-immolation has already energized Democrats and blacks. Democrats have an overwhelming advantage in registration. All they have to do to win the Presidential election is to register, show up and vote for their party.

It's depressing Lott lacked the respect for the President and the party to resign. I hope he reconsiders before he does further damage.

The very reason you are angry at fellow GOP'ers is the reason we have been and always will be morally superior to the gimmies. If something is wrong we say it regardless of party. NOT SO with the gimmies. They are the party that accepted the rape of Juanita Brodderick as a "PRIVATE MATTER" for one of their own, BUT goes APOPLECTIC about statement made by a conservative that requires a racial "INFERENCE" of a 54 year old matter made in a party like, jovial setting just to PRAISE a 100 year old retiring Senator.
