Obama fundraises at BET chair’s homeBy LEIGH MUNSIL | 4/27/12 8:44 PM EDT President Barack Obama attended a fundraiser Friday night at the home of Debra Lee, chairwoman and CEO of BET. About 40 people attended the $40,000-a-plate dinner in D.C.’s Woodley Park neighborhood. During his remarks, the president gave a nod to some of the acrimony toward Washington among the American people. "[T]hings are tough, and they've grown cynical, and they see the mess that goes on in Washington and there's a temptation at a certain point to just say, 'Oh, a plague on both their houses; nothing is...

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign website has removed several videos that pitched alarmist messages to African-American voters, following reporting by The Daily Caller and the Fox News Channel. In one video that the campaign yanked from the “African-Americans for Obama” section of its website Tuesday, actress Tatyana Ali seemed to predict that a second Obama term would bring a host of benefits to African-Americans once the president no longer had to concern himself with campaigning.

For as long as he lasts in the prez race, Mitt Romney is gonna regret offering to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry at Saturday night’s GOP debate. Why? Because only rich guys make $10,000 bets. The rest of the world says, “Betcha five bucks.” Or “betcha a beer.” But not Mitt, the son of an auto company CEO/Michigan Governor. Guys like Mitt, who is worth north of $190 million bet $10,000.If you missed the moment — or, we hope, have enough of a life that you weren’t watching a political debate on a Saturday night — Texas Gov....

BET founder Robert Johnson on the "FOX News Sunday" program: "Well, I think the president has to recalibrate his message. You don't get people to like you by attacking them or demeaning their success. You know, I grew up in a family of 10 kids, first one to go to college, and I've earned my success. I've earned my right to fly private if I choose to do so. "And by attacking me it is not going to convince me that I should take a bigger hit because I happen to be wealthy. You know, it is the old --...

Scott Pelley, CBS "Evening News" anchor: How do you create jobs in this country? Robert Johnson, founder of BET: Unfortunately now, I don't think we have the leadership either in the White House or the Congress to end what I call a zero-sum game mentality towards the U.S. economy. And until both parties agree that the goal is to rebuild the American economy to reflect the 21st century on a global environment - we're going to be stuck. And it's a little bit frightening from the standpoint of a business person and particularly an African-American business person. Pelley: What do...

Robert L. Johnson, BET founder and chairman of RLJ, appeared on CBS to talk about the countries growing debt problem and said President Obama is not the right person to end the 'zero-sum game' towards the U.S. economy. Miller asked Obama to consider the plight of a hypothetical young, African-American in Chicago's South Side: Father gone, mother working 10 hours a day for "peanuts," there are no jobs and, "You won't even say, 'Look, I am going to help you,'" Miller said. "Emmett, that is not -- first of all, that is not what people are saying," Obama said, bristling. "What people are saying all across the country is we are hurting and we've been hurting for a long time. And the question is how can we make sure the economy is working for every single person." Obama...

Could Herman Cain actually become the person who faces President Obama in the general election? The Republican presidential hopeful is riding high after a surprising and stunning victory in last weekend’s Florida straw poll. He says that the win has given his campaign momentum and is proof that he could go on to win his party’s nomination. I seriously doubt it, but a man can dream, can’t he? Still, he’s got people talking. There’s no doubt that such a matchup certainly would be one of history’s most interesting and widely watched contests. At one point people never imagined that Obama,...

-- Billionaire Richard Branson's next cutting-edge risk will expose him like never before: He'll have his legs shaved in public to dress up and serve as a flight attendant after losing a bet to a rival airline mogul. The winner of a charity auction will pay at least $650,000 for the honor, according to Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia. The Virgin Atlantic founder will hand the razor to one of 160 passengers on a special charity flight from London to Kuala Lumpur that he will personally serve on May 1 while wearing a female flight attendant's uniform, AirAsia said Monday.

BET Founder Warns Dems: Lose Jim Clyburn, Lose Black VotersNovember 11, 2010 06:38 AM (News One) — The founder of Black Entertainment Television is warning Democrats that pushing Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) out of leadership means losing black voters. Robert L. Johnson sent a letter to the House leadership and the Congressional Black Caucus underscoring why Clyburn should be whip over House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). To be clear, Johnson has no vote, and this leadership position will be determined by private ballot in a closed Democratic caucus meeting. But the Johnson letter seems to be more of...

Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT are giving an hour of free air time to President Obama less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The so-called “A Conversation with President Obama” will be live and commercial-free on six Viacom networks at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The networks will not give equal time to a Republican before the election, according to a spokeswoman. MTV denies that the Obama hour of TV is political, despite the timing, weeks before the midterm elections.

To say times are tough is an understatement. California families feel under siege, with an economy that stays down while housing prices do the same. So it's entirely reasonable that California's leaders, including those vying for the state's top executive job in November, are reconsidering the economically unsound AB 32, which is a toxic mix of command-and-control efforts to forcibly limit carbon emissions and pseudo-market functions such as a troubled cap-and-trade scheme. A federal cap-and-trade proposal from California's own Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, would have been disastrous for the nation and more particularly the Golden State. The American Council...

The nation’s first African-American billionaire, Robert Johnson, is enduring a cash crush so severe, reports Peter Lauria, that he had to hock his NBA franchise to Michael Jordan for a song.. When the nation’s first African-American billionaire, Robert Johnson, bought the expansion Charlotte Bobcats NBA team in 2002, his highest-profile move was hiring the most famous athlete in the world, Michael Jordan, to run the team. In a twist thick with irony, the employee has now become the savior: Two weeks ago, Jordan bought the team for pennies on the dollar. The sale underscores Johnson’s dire financial situation. Four sources...

The co-founder of Black Entertainment Television, Sheila Crump Johnson, endorsed Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell on Monday. “We need bold and innovative leadership to move our state forward, and that's why I've chosen to support Bob McDonnell for governor,” said Johnson, a Democrat, during remarks in Richmond, Va. “He has shown me that he has the right vision and the executive leadership skills that will guide Virginia through these challenging times.” McDonnell, a former state attorney general, told POLITICO that he was “thrilled” to have the support of someone with Johnson’s record as a “supporter of free enterprise.” “That’s...

RICHMOND, Va. — A billionaire co-founder of the Black Entertainment Television network who is also a key Democratic donor has endorsed Republican Bob McDonnell for Virginia governor. While flipping through the channels with my remote, I stopped on the movie, "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" on BET (Black Entertainment Television). Excellent movie. During a commercial break, they gave a news update. An announcer said, "They tried to get the Bronx kid, Sonia Sotomayor, but she beat them". There was not one mention of Sotomayor's controversial racist statements. Thus, black viewers who don't follow the news closely are led to conclude that those "evil racist white republicans" are at it again trying to block a person of color. I wonder how BET reported the Democrats' trashing of...

Today is the official publication date of The Dominant Animal: Human Evolution and the Environment by Paul and Anne Ehrlich. The release of this book was timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the publication of Paul Ehrlich's once exceedingly popular "The Population Bomb" in 1968. If you expect to see much about either of these books in the mainstream media, you are in for a big disappointment. The MSM is avoiding the whole subject of Paul Ehrlich and his apocalyptic "The Population Bomb" like the plague nowadays. The reason is probably because it might draw embarrassing attention to...

Increasing numbers of Chrysler dealers are disputing the bankrupt automaker’s claim that it selected dealerships for closure on purely economic grounds, and they have filed a suit against the automaker in U.S. bankruptcy court. Many of the closed dealers were also major donors to Republican candidates and political action committees,......

On Tuesday, Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, continued the family’s air assault on Obama that began shortly after he became the nation’s first African-American president. Speaking to FOX News, Liz took her father’s criticism of Obama a step further, saying that it appears the president is actually siding with terrorists. The insult was in response to the Obama administration’s decision to release photographs alleged to show abuses at U.S. prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan during the Bush administration. "I think it is really appalling that the administration is taking this step," she said in the...

Jeff Johnson knows how to make his audiences squirm. The young, black radio and TV political commentator waits for the discussion to turn to the topic being talked about ceaselessly, incessantly, ad nauseam: the meaning of the barrier-breaking election of Barack Obama. Then, in his laid-back style, he says, "The real issue for me is that history is not enough." That's when the mood becomes tense. "Black folks, in particular, get irritated," says Johnson, who travels the lecture circuit, hosts a half-hour show on Black Entertainment Television and has a weekly spot for social criticism on a radio program popular...

WASHINGTON, January 22, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A video advertisement being dubbed the "pro-life Obama ad" has been well received by Americans during the week of President Barack Obama's inauguration. The ad has already been viewed hundreds of thousands of time online, and will soon be appearing on major US television networks. The ad shows an ultrasound of a baby in a womb, while the text explains that during his life the baby’s father will abandon him, and his single mother will struggle to support him. While much of America was watching the inauguration of President Obama, BET viewers were seeing Obama's life story turned into an anti-abortion ad. In the 41-second ad, sponsored by catholicvote.org, a camera slowly zooms in on a fetus in a womb as these words appear on the screen: "This child's future is a broken home. He will be abandoned by his father. His single mother will struggle to raise him. Despite the hardships he will endure this child will become the 1st African-American President." The ad ends with a photograph of President Obama and this message: "Life: Imagine the Potential."...

Just across. BET and TV One apparently decided that with Barry O already pulling 90-95% of the black vote, they needn’t bother turning any precious airtime over to McCain. In fact, all four nights of the Democratic convention aired on both networks. The GOP convention didn’t air at all. Do note: Palin finished just shy of both candidates in total audience running on only six networks, two fewer than McCain and four fewer than Obama. Telemundo and Univision didn’t bother with night three coverage.

It was an Obama lovefest at the Black Entertainment Television awards last night. Puff Daddy/P Diddy/whatever chanted “Obama or die” and urged his peers to elect the “first black president.” Alicia Keys, last heard spreading conspiracy theories about the government killing Tupac and Biggie and creating gangsta rap to perpetuate black genocide, yelled “Obama, y’all!” It was one big race-based ad for Obama. So, who’s obsessing about his race? Oh, yeah. All of us non-black bigots!

BET Founder: 'Liberal Media' Want Obama to Win Photo of Matthew Sheffield. By Matthew Sheffield | April 18, 2008 - 11:47 ET Bob Johnson, founder of BETThe continuing left-wing furor over George Stephanopoulos's perfectly valid question about Barack Obama's associations with a known terrorist reminded me of something I wanted to blog earlier in the week before it erupted: an admission of a leftward bias on the part of the media from BET founder Bob Johnson. Interviewed by the Charlotte Observer Tuesday, Johnson said that the "liberal media" want Obama to win, partly out of racial pandering but also because...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --Wading back into the Democratic presidential race, billionaire businessman Bob Johnson said Monday that Sen. Barack Obama would not be his party's leading candidate if he were white. Johnson's comments to the Charlotte Observer echoed those of former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro. She stepped down as an adviser to Sen. Hillary Clinton last month after saying Obama wouldn't be where he is if he were white. "What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant is that if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called `Jerry Smith' and he says I'm going to run for president, would he start...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - One of Hillary Rodham Clinton's most prominent black supporters said Sunday he was insulted by the characterization by rival Barack Obama's presidential campaign of her remarks about the civil rights movement. Bob Johnson, the nation's first black billionaire and founder of the BET cable television network, said Obama's campaign had acted dishonestly and had distorted Clinton's remarks about Martin Luther King Jr. Johnson also seemed to hint at Obama's acknowledged youthful drug use, an issue that led another Clinton campaign official to resign. Johnson later denied that was the case.
