A veteran Hudson County freeholder and Jersey City police officer was charged yesterday with accepting thousands of dollars in kickbacks from a psychiatrist who won lucrative county contracts.

Bill Braker, who last month won his fifth term on the freeholder board, was arrested and handcuffed by FBI agents at his Jersey City home early yesterday morning.

He pulled a boner and should get a stiff penalty in a penal colony.

Perhaps he just wasn't up-to-date.

What is a freeholder? Is it a political position?

Yes, in New Jersey they are called Freeholders and in other states are called County Commissioners. We call them FreeLoaders. It's a term which was used in the Colonial days with men who owned large parcels of land and were placed in charge.

The Freeholders are in control of much of our tax bill. Services include: county hospital, funding the sheriffs office, maintain county roads, Office of aging, mosquito control, maintain the court buildings, funding the county clerk and register of deeds, operate the county vocational school and county camp and golf course and stuff like that.

I guess he was just hanging around with the wrong crowd and just couldn't keep up with the rest of them.
