NFL: Giants would have been flagged if they spiked it

NEW YORK -- Giants holder Matt Allen could not have spiked the botched snap on the final play of New York's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

It's against the rules.

Mike Pereira, the NFL supervisor of officials, confirmed Monday that Allen would not have been allowed to immediately spike the ball because it was a long snap. The only time a player can spike the ball is when he takes the snap from under the center.

With six seconds left Sunday and the Giants trailing 39-38, Matt Bryant lined up to try a potential game-winning 41-yard field goal. The snap from newly signed Trey Junkin was in the dirt. Allen fumbled the ball, then made a desperation pass downfield to what turned out to be an ineligible receiver, guard Rich Seubert.

Fox commentator Cris Collinsworth said at the time that since it was third down, Allen could have spiked the ball, giving the Giants another chance at a kick. Afterward, on the Fox postgame show, other commentators agreed.

Pereira said the only other option would have been to throw to an eligible receiver.

Fassel is one of the worst head coaches I've ever seen, for reasons I've outlined earlier on this thread.

They ought to demote him to offensive coordinator and replace him with someone who has no patience for sloppy play and mental mistakes.

I thought getting Chandler was a really good move last yr. Little did I know that he could get hurt on a quarterback sneak. I have never seen that happen before.

The game is playing with skill and taking advantage of opportunity.

Not to mention internal fortitude, which the Niners showed by hanging on.

I hope you're right. I'll take anybody over the Phony Whiners. I'm not a Raider fan but it will be fun watching them add a blemish to that 5 & 0 SB record SF has. And I would love to see the Raiders put Terrell Owens in his place. Go over the middle and have one or more Raiders Bad A$$es nail him with all they have. He should have been ejected yesterday. Totally classless!

You know the spread on the Tampon Bay vs. Niners game?

You are right on. I will admit I snapped off the tv in disgust when the score was 33-14. Because I wanted to see how much worse it might have gotten, I happened to turn it back on with a little over two minutes to go. I haven't been too impressed with the Niners overall this season, but they really showed their mettle when they had to.

I am hoping for a BART SuperBowl, though my problem will be who to root for.

Not many coaches get a team into the Super Bowl.

However, you may be right, that he is not meant to be a Head Coach.

I sat there....just stunned for the last 10 minutes of the game. But as I licked my wounds, I started thinking about how I felt before the season. I didn't expect much and much like 97 was pleasantly suprised at how things worked out. And of course like 97 the end was as bitter a pill as a fan should be forced to swallow. Take heart in what happened to the Vikings the next time they saw them in the playoffs.

Very true!

I did not expect them to get into the playoffs (espically after those ghastly defeats against Houston and Tenn.)

I knew the game with the 49er's would be a shoot out and the Giants, like the Jets, should have kept throwing the ball downfield.

The Giants need a kicking game, no one is going to win a championship without one!

The NFC East is not going to get any easier with Parcells in it!

Been listening to Brad for many, many years.
The guy is the consummate professional.
Even during his Cowboy broadcasts he never comes across as a homer, the man is very, very good.

Damn his traitorous hide.

But I gotta say our kicker isn't the biggest problem. Our highly paid holder doesn't do his day job(punting) and I believe this was our 3rd long snapper this year.

When...when are we going to hire some VaTech guys to coach our special teams so they stop being well....so "special"

Well...

I would like to see Rice get another ring. Rice is the best. But I got to go with the Niners; rise of the phoenix!

I do not live in Cali anymore and the closest team to me is the Peahawks, but I will always be a Niners fan.

I'd like to see the Raiders win it too, of course I'm a die-hard Raiders fan. I'm also a transplant from Cali to "Peahawk" territory. Kinda different up here isn't it.

Very different, I am in Washougal, WA - east of Vancouver and north east of Portland, Or.

It took me about 3 years to get use to all the rain and short summers. Nice today though.

Better Fishing up here for sure.

Yea, I'm up here in Everett, 20 miles north of Seattle on the I-5 corridor. Definately took a little getting used to rain wise, but other than that it's ok. People sure are more friendly.

(More than I would have paid for B. Robinson, Azuma, Alfonzo Boone and McQuarters.)

Arrrrgh...R.W. McQuarters...the lasting monument to the Dwight Clark era in San Francisco.

I will always be grateful for Clark's excellence on the field for the Niners, but he is a horrible judge of talent. He wasted first round picks on McQuarters and Jim Druckenmiller (factoring in the Druckenmiller selection was the video Jim sent NFL teams in which he pulled a station wagon) among other bonehead moves.

When Carmen Policy went to become President of the new Cleveland Browns and made Clark his Director of Ops, I predicted that the Browns would not make the playoffs until Clark was gone. They canned him last year, and they made it to the wild card game and darn near won.
