DEM (subliminal) NEGATIVE (smear) ATTACKS ON BUSH (past alcoholism)
NBC Nightly News ^ | 1/6/03 | NBC News reporter Campbell Brown

NBC Nightly News (1/6/03) reported on a Democrat news conference where House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, “This is our jump start to the economy, as opposed to the President's plan of careening off the road recklessly, jeopardizing the long-term fiscal soundness for our country.”

To paraphrase President Reagan -- 'Here they go again.' Maybe it is just me, but it seems obvious that the Dems are trying to run a smear campaign against Bush -- targeting his past battles with alcohol. The 'careening' out of control seems to be a direct reference to Bush's DUI episode years ago.

Remember, just a month ago Gore tried a similar trick. According to the Washington Post:

"Book-hawking ex-veep Al Gore, appearing yesterday with wife and co-author Tipper Gore on WAMU-FM's 'Diane Rehm Show,' evangelized for decreasing U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil and criticized President Bush's plan to permit drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. 'It's like an alcoholic saying, "I know where I can get my hands on another, ah -- "' Gore said before Rehm cut him off with a question, reports The Post's Barbara E. Martinez. Surely that wasn't a veiled reference to the president's checkered past with demon rum!" Lloyd Grove, the Washington Post 12/10/02 (Yes, this is an excerpt)

Nice! Man, you're quick, I haven't even figured out how to post pictures yet, never mind have a Ted Kennedy assault package ready to fire, ha ha ha. Great pictures.

YTedK.com is a great site. Some of the stuff about how Mary Jo died is just heartbreaking, though.

It's the same old class-warfare refrain from the Democrats. They can't motivate people to get behind their proposals unless they first get people to hate their opponents. I heard a Democrat congressman on Hannity and Colmes last night pooh-poohing a provision in the Bush plan that may eliminate the tax on dividend income from stocks, and the Dem said "This only would benefit the wealthy, because only 20% of people own stocks." LIE! I don't know the figure, but it's close to two-thirds of Americans that own stocks, considering all of the 401Ks there are out there.

But consider the big picture. What everyone is talking about is a tax cut. The debate is over what type of tax cut. Dems want a tax cut that goes to people with incomes below $50,000. Bush wants something that is more broad in its impact. But everyone is talking tax cuts! We've won!!! The Dems can only win, politically, if they take an essentially conservative position.

I'm sure she is, but I bet it was her producer that made sure Pelosi got a nationwide audience to make her smear.

I heard this last night but, naturally, I didn't have it taped or anything. I hoped to find it on Pelosi's leadership web site, but it wasn't in her 'prepared' remarks. Luckily, MSNBC had a videoclip.

I guess my point (and suspicion) is, Pelosi's comments were meant for the liberal press (who would find it 'so' clever) and an unsuspecting audience of sheeple who would just absorb the imagery of the 'subliminal' message.

I know, quite a shift in political mood from a decade ago when Clinton and the Dems passed one of the largest tax increases in history and tried to pass that billion dollar boondogle 'stimulus' plan.

It makes me wonder, though, what is in that 'aid package' for the states. How much $$$ for Homeland Defense will be spent on people guarding coral reefs and other 'vital' national resources. Could be just as bad.

As far as the Dem congressman and his stats, her is what the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported:

Paying dividends
Published Jan. 7, 2003 CUTBX

"The centerpiece of President Bush's stimulus package is cutting the tax on stock dividends. An Internal Revenue Service analysis of tax returns filed in 2000 indicates that just 26.4 percent of filers listed dividend income.

"63 percent of such a cut would go to the 29.1 percent of filers with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) above $100,000."

I don't remember the specifics, maybe he did not even get an official DUI, but some Dem in Maine released the story right before the 2000 presidential election that Bush (back when he drank alcohol) drove off the road or sideswiped some bushes after a family gathering at which alcohol was served. No major damage done, but some credit the story with hurting Bush's momentun at the end of the 2000 election.

There is also a poll on the site with the full article.
Question is will Bush's plan work. Right now it is ahead 59 per cent. It is down on the left side of the page.

Thanks for the Star report. To be fair, it sounds like the Dem congressman was correct...It's about 26% of taxpayers who would benefit from such a dividend tax cut. Maybe 80% own stocks, but not that many people receive dividend income. But, still...I'm all in favor of tax cuts for the rich! They are the ones who actually stimulate the economy, what with their investments, or plowing back money into their own businesses. Give tax cuts to middle-income ($50k or less) alone, and all they'll do is go out and buy new wide-screen TVs with the savings. Good for the TV industry, but not necessarily for the general economy.

You know, listening to Pelosi, reminds me that just a few years ago someone like her would only be able to work in a sheltered workshop but; now: Well isn't amazing what they can train these poor people to do?

You and I agree, I was certainly not trying to help a SocDem congressthing, just trying to be informational. For one thing, the congressthing probably was misquoting the facts and I agree w/ you. I am not personally wealthy, but I understand the dynamics.

Interesting you should say that about the sheltered workshop, because Pelosi is another good example of how liberalism puts a person on the road to mental illness.

It's like another Democrat saw -- the point that they believe it is an economic stimulus to extend people's unemployment benefits. I was unemployed late in 2001, and I can tell you I would rather have a JOB than extended unemployment benefits. But that is another way that the Democrats keep their minions in bondage, rather than free-up opportunities.

I will say this: I believe that Bush's plan, whatever the details, is probably more healthy for the economy and the nation than what the Dems propose. Since the Dems are experts at use of smoke and mirrors, I hope that part of the White House strategy is to do some basic economic education on people, so that the people will be able to tell substance from symbolism in the coming economic debate.

I think we agree. I'm just saying with all the billions Bush is throwing around for states, I hope it is closely monitored. Bush's plan will be better for the US than any fake Dem "fiscal responsibility"" plan -- meaning 'we raise your taxes to pay for our spending.'
