It was Columbus who actually was able to:

(2) exploit,
(3) take advantage of,
(4) make a profit

on the endeavor.

The answer is NO. There was no such thing as AMERICA at that time. Parts of the North and South America were not even grouped together into one continental mass as each is now. There were other races, civilizations that had visited the land before the Chinese.

I read an interesting article some time back. The article was titled "The Garden Of Eden" and described an area that was along the coast of Mississippi, part of coastal Louisiana, south Alabama, north Florida and south Georgia.
This study concluded that these areas remained essentially 'intact' and unchanged through-out all the Ice Ages for the last 28-35 million years and that the flora and fauna for all of North America was 'reseeded' from this area time and time again. Yes, including all the Redwoods, etc. on the west coast which was dessicated or under ice.
I guess the Chinese came to the west coast and got their Redwoods because originally they came from 'The Garden Of Eden.' (Huh?)

They were kind of like our Apollo program to the moon: all flags and footprints, and no effort to establish a lasting presence or continuing transits.
