[history]
Gov. Gray Davis is proposing that California make room for more condemned inmates, even as Illinois' decision to empty its death row has reignited the national debate over capital punishment.
The state budget Davis proposed last week includes $220 million to build a new, state-of-the-art death row at California's historic San Quentin Prison, state officials say. The new facility would hold up to 1,000 men awaiting execution, allowing for a big expansion from the state's current death row of 603, officials said.

If you want to save some Budget Dollars try speeding up the process of carrying out the punishment. There would then be 600 plus open cells.

There's another way of making more room on Death Row without releasing these guys or adding new prison space. Davis just has to sign the execution orders for some of the ones who have been waiting for 10 years or more. No wonder the state budget is so far in the red.

I find it really embarassing that the Democrat Governor of California, the Land of Fruits and Nuts, appears further to the right of this issue than George Ryan, the Republican Governor of Illinois, the Land of Lincoln.

They could have built each potential inmate a $200,000 house and saved money. How much does cement cost in California, anyhow?

I can't remember ever hearing that a prisoner was put to death in California. I can see that they'd need more space.

Faced with a multibillion-dollar budget shortfall, Davis suggested the San Quentin expansion -- if approved by the state Legislature -- be funded with bonds. Bonds are free money, right?
