ALERT.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency received a phone call that the water system in Columbus had been poisoned. Local city and county officials have convened a meeting to coordinate a plan of action to inform the public concerning the situation.

The public may use bottled water until further notice. We are cooperating with the Mississippi State Department of Health. At present, we don't know if it is a credible threat, but we will be remiss is we didn't notify the public. We will keep you updated as we receive the information.

Wouldn't there have been at least some reports of sickness in the area if this act were actually carried out?

The latest at 7:00 PM Central is that the city water in Columbus, Mississippi is OK; however, the county water in Lowndes and Kemper Counties is still questionable. Bottled water was quickly sold out of all local stores, but the latest includes plans for five trucks to arrive shortly at the K-Mart in Columbus with bottled water.

I would think we would have heard something by now if this was true. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency got the call at 9 AM this morning.

Even if this is a response to a prank call, the long lines for bottled water before all the bottled water supplies were depleted in a town of over 45,000 should be a lesson for us all as we move closer to war.

Some very basic disaster preparedness steps may be prudent for us all until the war against Iraq has been concluded.

It's very "true" to the folks in Columbus. Fire trucks were delivering water to the hospitals today.

Columbus Air Force Base is about 5 miles north of Columbus, Mississippi University for Women is within the city limits, and the main campus of Mississippi State is in Starkville, about 27 miles west.

Not just war, we should be prepared for an emergency at all times. I always try to keep extra water on hand. This time of the year in Ohio we are especially prone to water main breaks that can leave us without running water for a while.

Depending on the agent in question, symptoms may not occur instantaneously.

Not just war, we should be prepared for an emergency at all times.

Good advice. But based on the experience of a medium size town today, not many appear to be following such common sense preparations.
