N.C. Representative Michael Decker Switches to Democrat Party

NORTH CAROLINA REPUBLICAN PARTY 1506 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, North Carolina 27605 Tele. (919) 828-6423 • Fax (919) 899-3815 • www.NCGOP.org For immediate release January 24, 2003 ........................................................................................................

Decker To Go Down As “North Carolina’s Own Jim Jeffords”

(RALEIGH) – In a call today to N.C. Representative Mike Decker of Forsyth County, North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Bill Cobey was informed that Rep. Decker has switched to the Democrat Party, changed his registration, and will be voting for Jim Black for Speaker. No reason was given.

“Given Mike Decker’s conservative voting record in the General Assembly, I find this to be irrational and bizarre behavior,” said Cobey. “I wish he had discussed this situation before taking any kind of action, but today is the first I have heard anything of this truly perplexing decision.”

“Mike Decker will unfortunately go down in history as North Carolina’s own Jim Jeffords, switching a closely divided State House from the party that was elected to the majority – the Republican Party – to the party that lost the majority in the November elections – the Democrat Party,” said Cobey.

“I wonder, does all of this mean that Jim Black or Mike Easley have made some type of promise to Decker?” asked Cobey. “Could that promise involve the Speaker pro tem position, which pays 50% more than a rank-and-file member receives, or some promise of a job in the Easley administration?”

If you would like to personally express your disappointment to Rep. Decker, his legislative office phone number is (919) 733-5988 and his email is Miked@ncleg.net. His home number is (336) 595-3008.

For a politician to represent himself as a member of one party and to then change his party affiliation during a current term, is one of the worst things that an American could do.

It ranks right up there with treason in my book, and should recieve an appropriate response from the people who elected him.

This guy should be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

What your stats don't indicate, and I'd bet would show if all of the data were available, is that at present, more than 50% of the states population now works for some form of state, county, local or Federal govt.

When more than half the population feeds off the other half, and has the right to vote themselves largess via liberal candidates, then the whole house of cards will eventually come down.

The problem is, that they may take the rest of us down with them.

Now that the NC State House is split at 50/50 will this greatly harm the NC GOP chances of receiving a fair redistricting in the NC General Assembly?

NC Freepers shouldn't just get mad; they ought to work on ending the political careers of Sen. John Edwards & Gov. Mike " Four At More" Easley in 2004.

Suggestion: check out activities and donations to Decker in re NC trial lawyers. They've got the big bucks and a lot at stake since Mississippi.

I am SICK!!

The RATS are getting so bold. They just openly ignore the votes of the people they're supposedly representing.

This guy will have every conservative group after him in the next election. Meanwhile, we have a Rat legislature for 2 years!!!

It's time to pass a law that if someone wants to change his or her party, he must resign and run again. It's not fair to the people who worked in or gave $ to the campaign and not fair to the people who voted for him or her.

They obviously have some serious shit on him.

My first thought exactly.
The only way the Republicans can counter this tactic is by finding out the same dirt on this scumbag Decker that the Democrats have.

In a phone interview Mr. Decker was asked to explain his sudden and unexpected move. He had two words "Scott Ritter". This reporter could get nothing more out of Mr. Decker, but it is safe to assume the NC Democratic party has some dirt on Mr. Decker. Possibly that he is a child molestor and they would expose it if he didnt switch. </ sarcasm> They obviously have some serious shit on him.

Well, that shows what kind of people they like in their party, if it WAS due to dirt.

I understand your position and I agree completely.

If a conservative switches to a conservative party, or a liberal switches to a liberal party, there really is no hypocrisy (although there could certainly be some duplicity and ulterior motives), regardless of party tags.

But when a conservative switches to the scumbag Democrat Party, that is hypocrisy. That is sick.

What an interesting theory, it makes as much sense as anything else in this strange defection. No, sorry I didn't hear ya. I was listening in between vacuming and doing the laundry.

It sounds as though an election law should be considered in which a party-switcher is required to step down, return what he owes to his previous party and to have to run against that party's new pick. Otherwise, the party that's in majority at it's first meeting, barring a member's death or disablement, should be the majority until the next election.

THIS IS THE FIRST REAL RESPONSE, THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY PREVENT FUTURE DEFECTIONS FROM THE GOP.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO ANYONE WHO DID SOMETHING DURING THE ELECTION, WE MUST DO BETTER. NOT ENOUGH OF US DID.

IF THE AVERAGE FREEPER GOT OFF THEIR KEYBOARD AND PUT THEIR EFFORTS BEHIND A CANDIDATE OR TWO, WE WOULD HAVE MORE THAN A ONE VOTE MARGIN IN THE STATE HOUSE. THEN A DEFECTION BY A MARGINAL PLAYER (DECKER) WOULD NOT CAUSE OUR ENTIRE FALL EFFORT (WINNING THE STATE HOUSE) TO FALL INTO A TIE.

MORE LATER.....BECAUSE I'M FURIOUS.

A lot of the former Democrats in the South who switched to the Republican party were never as conservative as the GOP base. The late John Bowden Connally was believed to have regretted his 1973 defection to the Republicans. It broke Lady Bird Johnson's heart. A TX congressman whose name escapes me defected in 1995, but he lost the 1996 primary to now Rep. Ron Paul, R-TX. A Freeper in Lubbock says that Lubbock County is now heavily Republican, but most of the Republicans are former Democrat moderates who have hijacked the party there from the conservative base. In LA, Republicans frequently cross party lines to support such Democrats as John Breaux and Mary Landrieu. So some of these defections may not have been as useful in the long run as they seemed at the time of the party switch. Former Democrat Jesse Helms, however, remained true to conservatism after his defection in 1970.
