Prosecutor's investigator charged with bookmaking The Gloucester County official was fired. He is accused of promoting much more than office pools. By Sam Wood Inquirer Staff Writer
An investigator with the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office was fired Friday after it was alleged that he was living a double life as a bookie, authorities said yesterday.
Matthew Ebert, a six-year veteran of the office, was charged with official misconduct and promoting gambling on the job, said John R. Hagerty, spokesman for the state Division of Criminal Justice.
Ebert, 30, of Pixley Court, West Deptford, was arrested Thursday by members of the division's Special Prosecutions Bureau when he reported to the Bellmawr state police barracks as part of his job, Hagerty said yesterday.
Ebert is accused of running more than an office pool, Hagerty said.
"Whenever he was available, he was taking bets," Hagerty said. "Football, baseball, basketball, and college b-ball, he took bets on them all."
Hagerty would not comment on the number of clients or how much money the alleged bookmaking operation generated each week. No other suspects have been identified, and there have been no additional arrests.
"The investigation is ongoing," Hagerty said.
State police detectives working with the State Police Corruption Unit uncovered the alleged operation eight months ago, Hagerty said.
Ebert was released on a complaint summons pending a date in state Superior Court, Hagerty said. If convicted of all charges, Ebert could face 10 years in prison and a $150,000 fine, Hagerty said.
What a great state to be a corruption investigator in. The targets are infinite.
