Bus station plays jazz to drive teenagers away

A bus station in America is planning to play classical music and smooth jazz to discourage loitering teenagers.

Officials at the Trade Street in Charlotte, North Carolina, hope the "grow-up" music will irritate groups of youths who hang around the station.

The station's loudspeakers already emit the calls of hawks and owls to frighten away pigeons that roost in the rafters.

"The idea is to make the atmosphere at the Trade Street station less pleasant for those who aren't there to catch a bus," a spokeswoman told the Charlotte Observer.

"We know if we play a certain genre, people won't want to hang around."

When my kids went to public school in Japan, the melody which played over the PA system was Edvard Grieg's Varen. In addition, the kids clean the school at the end of the day. Vandalism is virtually nil.

Yes, the classical would be fine, and good jazz would be fine, but 'smooth jazz' would drive me away!

agreed,i prefer the likes of vince guaraldi and art blakey then "smooth jazz"(sounds more like cheesy love music to me)

There is some great stuff out there- Classical, Blues, Jazz, and I used to *play* Dixieland! I don't care for Rap or most Country. That said, I have a (possible)Country tune stuck in my head- Hannity plays it as bumper music. Female vocalist- "Let Freedom Ring"? Wish I knew who it was and what it is actually called, and from what album.

I *finally* found a copy of Scarlet Rivera's first album off of the Internet- vinyl, no less. Dubbed it to CD so I could listen in the car. I am not sure how to classify it- Jazz Violin?

A McDonald's in downtown Dallas used to be a hangout for gangs, muggers, etc. until they started playing classical music. The transformation was amazing. Don't know if they still do it.

vince guaraldi became a major favorite of mine after i learned he did the peanuts soundtrack for most of the cartoons,although ive never had a chance to listen to his non peanuts stuff(father has it all on vinyl)

Guaraldi is pretty commonly available on CD. A lot of his work is very different from the tunes he did for 'Peanuts', although that remains my favorite musically.

Scarlet Rivera did a vinyl LP in 1978 or so that was simply titled 'Scarlet Rivera'. That is the one I finally found.

Cost was under ten bucks, including shipping.

I fear for the future of music with such shallow audiences these days.

What I've found over the years was that the vast majority of people just don't want to hear anything that isn't all over the radio or played at clubs, etc. Nothing different than the homogenized pap readily available at any fine shopping establishment.
