You folks to the south and east of KS have been getting the brunt of all these storms....we have been starving for moisture. I would love to see just one of your monster snowstorms this year.

If we'd known you were needing it, we'd have been glad to divert it your way.

The secret is snow tires!
I vaguely recall a fall ritual of getting snow tires put on the car when I was growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.

I live in SW Mo, 60 miles N of Joplin. My jonquils are up, but not blooming yet. I am with you, truly sick of this weather. Must be all that global warming!!

Yes, but old as I am, I confess that I don't know what they are! Don't they have studs or something?

Your post triggered a thought (besides being glad you weren't seriously injured) : Maybe it's the lack of Taco Cabanas up here that make such poor drivers.

I went to grad school at Penn State, and my first job was in Oklahoma City. Central Pennsylvania had more snow and had snow for more of the year, but I never encountered any conditions in Pennsylvania that were near as scary as an Oklahoma ice storm. In the early 90's, an ice storm hit OKC one Friday. Work let out at noon, but I had too much to do. I stayed until 11:00 pm thinking that it would be better when no one else was on the road. I had a 4-wheel drive pickup, and it took me an hour to drive 8 miles to my apartment. I drove much of that time with my right-side wheels off the road where I could get a little traction in the dirt. The road itself was a solid, slick, sheet of ice.

Lived in okieland for 15 years and seen everything from genuine dust storms to killa blizzards.
Other than the ocassional 120° heat wave it was paradise.....
Hauling hay in such temps is not advisable.
Been in kansas nearly as long. If you exclude F5 tornados, it doesn't seem to be as bad.

We moved here in January from sunny Houston. I haven't been warm since. :)

I can't even tell you how many times people have said to me they didn't think we EVER got snow in Texas! lol........ I just smile and remind them how huge the State is.... and tell them yes, we got snow every year............
To: PhiKapMom
Nobody knows how to do four-way-stops here. They just SIT there when it's their turn. Exasperating. I don't know how many times it turned into a battle of wills--he waves me through, I start to go, he starts to go--we both stop and wait...he waves me through, and this time I'm not willing to be taken in so I wave HIM through, and he waves ME through again, so finally I start to go and then....

Snow tires just have a tread pattern that's optimized for traction in snow (at the expense of traction on dry roads). The ones I looked at on
http://www.tirerack.com did not have studs, but that is not to say they aren't available that way...
To: ChemistCat
That's why I either speed up or slow down so as to make sure I don't get to the white line at the same time as someone else (at a 4-way stop).

I learned the lesson about "never call the cops" when I let a young lady go on with only phone numbers exchanged..when my car appeared to be undamaged. However, in daylight and no rain, there was indeed damage underneath the car that didn't show on the outside. There turned out to be nothing I could do but eat it.
