Milwaukee Support Our Troops Rally 3/8/03
self | 3/8/03 | self

Just got back from the Support Our Troops Rally in Milwaukee. LouD started us off with an inspirational speech (could you post a link or repost it here?). Charlie Sykes, Jeff Wagner, and Scott Walker made speeches and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient was recognized.

The wind howled and the snow began to fall, but spirits were high and attendance was outstanding.

Only saw one anti with a sign saying something about a Nukular cowboy . . . he had a GWB mask on and was too much of a coward to show his face. The policemen on horseback had him surrounded . . for his own protection, I think.

Fox 6 was there with cameras. Didn't see WTMJ or Channel 12. Anyone else see any other media?

I'm not very good at estimating crowd size, but I have to say that it seemed as though there were over a thousand people at this rally. Can't even imagine how big it would have been if the weather had been better.

It was wonderful to hear the silent majority beginning to get its voice again. Tuning up for bigger things, hopefully - like the destruction of a homicidal maniac, the elimination of a supply line for terrorists, and the liberation of the Iraqi people.

FReep on, Milwaukee!

I asked one of the sheriffs who had walked around the crowd a few times, and she thought 1000 was a good estimate.

Considering the weather, and the fact that the In Our Name petition hadn't been mined for email addresses, I'd say it was a pretty impressive turnout.

Personally saw 58 there. I also heard 4 and 12 were there, along with a pair of Journtinel reporters.

Somehow, I missed you two, but LouD, Crow, reaganrenegade, repubicandiva and a few others stopped in at Murphy's to wait out the worst of the snow, which started in earnest as everything was being broken down.

There is a Washington County Republican Party rally at 2 over at the county fairgrounds (thread here), and a possible (i.e. don't quote me) rally back in the usual Racine location tomorrow at 2 as well.

Kudos to all who turned out to make this a great rally. We were coming down, but the weather north of MKE was just brutal. I have to hand it to you all for braving the worst weather we have had all year. It was 15 degrees, windy, and snowing a very wet combination of snow and ice. This is one great group of FReepers! I'll try to make to to Washington County tomorrow.

Heard an unofficial MPD count of 1,500. I'd say that is about right; it might be a bit low.

So far, things are going right in Wisconsin. We had a successful FReep and Marquette won (I won't mention the snowstorm that hit in full fury right after the FReep because I was safely ensconsed at a local watering hole). Go Bucky Badger and Panthers.

I hear you about the snow. We saw a few people make it around as things were being broken down a bit prematurely due to the weather.

Thanks to everyone who came out in a driving snow to rally in support of our troops!

The official count from MPD was "well in excess" of 1500.

This contrasts with what was just reported on WTMJ4 (the local NBC affiliate, and far more liberal in their reporting than WTMJ radio) - They claimed "hundreds" of people showed up, and limited their footage to tight shots of "WTMJ Radio personality Charlie Sykes". Their one more distant shot was from behind the fountain, making the crowd look pretty thin.

I think WTMJ4 News needs FReeping before the 10:00 news; Here's their contact info:

news@touchtmj4.com

Remember - If we want today to count for anything, we need to make sure that it was accurately reported. That was the whole point. Please FReep the hell out of these people, and ping others to do so as well. Phone calls work better, but follow up with e-mails. Anyone calling from outside the viewing area should use *67 to block caller ID.
