A wave of B-52 bombers are set to hit Iraq within the hour, according to reports.
Eleven of the giant warplanes took off from RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire shortly earlier.
The plane has been in service with the United States Air Force since 1955.
It established its fearful reputation with carpet bombing raids during the Vietnam War.
More recently, it has seen service in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Yugoslavia.

B-52H's and haven't been in the inventory since 1955. B-52H's the latest version Yeh, last one built in 1964. Mere newbies. :) They are currently going through what is termed the "Avionics Midlife Upgrade". That's about right since they are to be around until around 2040. It would be nice to get new engines though. The TF-33s were not the latest design in '64, by now they are positively obsolete.

You should have seen me Wednesday night..... Plus, this military team isn't going to reveal anything they don't want us to know. I have a feeling they kicked out CNN from Baghdad because they were blabbing things they shouldn't have.

Maybe if they have anything left on the way back, they can ease their loads over the Eiffel Tower.

OK, I'm shocked and awed.

Only some launched with cruise missiles on the pylons. Some of the B-52's were seen being loaded with dumb bombs. Reports of heavy bombing in the north near Kirkuk. The BUFFs carrying these dumb munitions would indeed have to fly into Iraq.

"Its hard to pinpoint your bombing run in a B-52."
B-52s were providing close air support with JDAMs during Afghanistan. During Allied Force in Yugoslavia B-52s were dropping short trains of dumb munitions that cut runways and taxiways. The dumb munitions will be used well away from large population areas.
