Practically the entire economies of those three provinces consist of wealth transfers from provinces further to the west in the form of welfare and the like.

Huh?

Maybe the Maritime provinces, but certainly not Alberta!!!

Petro-Canada was one of those "Crown corporations" that you mentioned. The running joke out west in Alberta is that Petro-Canada stands for Pierre Elliott Trudeau Ripped Off Canada.

If we did, we'd have to say goodbye to the Republican Party. Practically the entire economies of those three provinces consist of wealth transfers from provinces further to the west in the form of welfare and the like.

Good point. I'm half Newfie, so I'm a bit biased.

My family are go-getters who despise the French and the Canadian federal government. They believe that the Canadian Federal government has choked off practically every avenue of wealth available to them forcing them to the welfare rolls.

They ALL hate greenpeace and every moron environmentalist, they love to hunt and still love the taste of baby seal.

The Newfies also have one of the largest known oil reserves off their shores and a large hydroelectric plant that feeds much of NE US. Unfortunately, the frogs control it ... but that could change!

BUT, you are right. The rot of stagnation has set in amoung too many Newfies.

The province of Alberta should be annexed to the USA. The great majority of Albertans would love to see that happen. They're very different from the rest of Canada, especially from those Quebecois nuts. I am a Canadian and I know them quite well.

Should we work on it?

Famous quote from an American who once lived there:

"I didn't live in Canada -- I lived in Alberta."

You were right about Alberta and Albertans. What a difference between Klein and that little spineless weasel Chretien who is just kissing Chirac!!! Canada has relinquished its sovereignty to the UN. To turn its back to the only country who its' security depends on, to turn its back on their best friend, neighbor, and ally is totally reprehensible. But then again, what can you expect from a socialist little French Quebecer who only needs 30% of the vote to get elected? 30% of the vote, which he finds easily in Ontario, the rest of Canada doesn't count. What a jerk!

Check your facts. That's not true. Far from it.

Hmmmmmmm!

It would be interesting to poll Alberta to see whether they'd prefer being tethered to DC or to Ottawa.

Well, I think we could annex Alberta, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia as well. British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec are lost causes. PEI I'm not sure.

Alberta is definitely one of the more conservative provinces. But despite who may be currently in power, the other prarie provinces are also fairly conservative -- Manitoba and Saskatchewan. BC I'm unsure about. They've got a lot of immigrants there, but I think that many of the more rural ridings (districts) outside of Vancouver elect more conservative parliamentarians.

Ontario's politics are like NY's or Massachusetts. The folks there are liberal, but vote for the occasional non-leftists to run their own government like NY and MA both have Republican governors.

Quebec is a completely lost cause. No way we'd ever want that.

The maritimes are all very left wing. They elect the crazies. They don't have much to offer economically.

So, in the end, I'd probably be satisfied taking BC, AB, SK and MB. That would also maintain geographical integrity. Ontario and the Maritimes could keep the Canada moniker, the anthem and the maple leaf flag. Quebec could become its own crazy country. And that little enclave that is still owned by France would stay French...

Snowyman is right.

It's not like you think it is up there. Whenever a poll is conducted of Canadians regarding the future of the country, Albertans consistently say that they would NOT want to become part of the United States. I can't say I blame them -- Choosing between Ottawa or Washington is a lose-lose situation for a place that considers Edmonton a communist enclave.

If asked about their choice between Ottawa and Washington, most Albertans I know would answer, "Calgary."

You do realize BC has a Liberal government, Saskatchewan and Manitoba NDP, as in socialist beyond California.

Alberta and Ontario, Ontario having the strongest economy, are the two that pay in but do not recieve any payment out.

And yet my own family are incredibly right-wing pro-gun owning, anti-abortion, anti-Fed, harp-seal eating, Greenpeace hating, hard-working Christian Newfies that I can't see abandoning NFLD to Ottawa.

This makes alot of sense. It dont think Chickenen or wahtever his name is up there in frenchie canada has much support in their flyover country, Alberta and Sasketchewan.

I have many friends, all of them associated with the oil and natural gas business, from Canada. Only one is an "easterner", and all of them are conservative and 100% behind US action against Hussein. Most of them are married to American women and/or children have dual citizenship US/Canada from being born in the US. They are good people and I am glad someone from their country has stepped up and spoke positively on US policy. They will be too if they have not already heard. I'm mailing this link to them. Thanks!

Canada politics.

Like the Dakotas. Could produce, can when they want, but darn that federal teat is so eay to latch onto and not let go.

Sensible minded people that can't stop letting Rats run the show in the capitol.

On the terror, their policy makers, like the French, think if you stay out Al-Queda's way, maybe they won't mess with us. Sooner or later they might get used too, like the French. Hope that never happens becuase I've not personnally met a Canadian yet I could not get along with or reason with.
