Something is weird here. There is no reason to "seize" an airport in Kurdish territory. We're already there. Just land and save the trouble of repacking the parachutes.

I strongly suspect that this airfield is near, not in, Kurdish-controlled territory.

They have a Republican guard unit up there. Probably were bombing the heck out of them the last few days. These guys are there to secure the airfield for what is left until they drop the heavy armor in for the push Southward.

This war has planned surprises. That's what Franks said!

Shhh...thought there was a war on. Doesn't this fall under the loose lips category. No, I'm not a mod or admin or whatever they call themselves.
PS Ever heard of a vice-grip? There may be a "nut" in the middle of this one.

I have a friend on the ground there. In fact, he surveyed the landing zone prior to their arrival. I asked him the same question, since I knew the Kurds controlled that airfield. His explanation makes sense. They did it to get the gold star on their wings. Land at friendly airfield = no gold star. Make "combat" drop = gold star. The gold stars are extremely rare these days, so you grab any chance you have to get one.
