March 27, 2003 -- British and American warplanes yesterday smashed a convoy of Iraqi armored vehicles heading out of the southern city of Basra - but it was unclear if the column was retreating from a popular uprising or striking out against coalition troops.

"There's some tanks refueling, but we couldn't engage them because they were right next to a hospital," he said

Shoot the damn tank - the "hospital" is probably filled with ammo and more tanks.

Why are we, right now, not dropping water and food, scattered all over and around this city? Even if the bad guys get MOST of if, many will be helped and we can honestly say to the world that we did our best, since the politics of this is important enuf that we are putting more of our kids at risk avoiding certain "zones" and civillians. WHY?

Perhaps this helps to explain that.

The AP reports

The start of aid shipped in through the port of Umm Qasr has been delayed. Two mines were discovered in the waterway that leads to the port. The British officials have decided that the entire waterway needs to be swept by divers and dolphins before humanitarian and military ships can enter.

"The situation is stable," he told Al-Jazeera television. "Resistance [to the coalition forces] is continuing and we are teaching them more lessons."

Gotta love this optimistic fool. About the only lesson being taught the British Forces arrayed around Basra right now is that the Iraqi vehicles blow up real good and the kill ratio is a coefficient of the number of rounds in their assault weapon clips and the time it takes to reload 'em.

If we keep this up many of our troops will be in the hospital.

regretfully, I did not make myself clear. By DROPPING supplies, my intention was to convey the need to use aircraft to "scatter" and encircle the town with food and water...by AIR...regrets

Aren't the two related? Stuff is shipped in, then dropped in locally. That's how I thought this worked anyway.

my hope, IF possible, was that we could fly over all the ground impediments from some point beyond the problems faced by shipping by water and overland...practically though, would probably have been done already if not for some impracticality of which I am not aware...we can only do our best to help these people and are almost surely doing that...

Surely we can fly in from Kuwait. That is not a mined port, I'm sure. I'll have to check my maps now to figure this out.
