NEW YORK (AP) -- A Columbia University professor told an anti-war gathering that he would like to see "a million Mogadishus" -- referring to the 1993 ambush in Somalia that killed 18 American servicemen.

At Wednesday night's "teach-in" on the Columbia campus, Nicholas De Genova also called for the defeat of U.S. forces in Iraq and said, "The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military." And he asserted that Americans who call themselves "patriots" are white supremacists.

I freeped! As an educator for 32 years, I took him to task about the responsibilty of the educator. The young mind is too idealistic and vulnerable to hear such rubbish. An educator has no right to speak as he did in public, in the classroom or anywhere else in a public venue. Obviously this person has another agenda. He leans so far left that the scale is tilted. He deserves to have his little knuckles rapped by the university and other appalled Americans. I'd like to see him "removed" from the staff.

I believe Foner is a Communist. He admits he was raised in a "Communist-oriented" family.

Nicholas De Genova is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Program in Latina/o Studies at Columbia University. He was previously Acting Assistant Professor in the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. De Genova is currently completing two book projects, one entitled Working the Boundaries: Race, Space, and "Illegality" in Mexican Chicago (forthcoming, Duke University Press), and a second co-authored work (with Ana Yolanda Ramos-Zayas) entitled Latino Optics: Racialization and Citizenship Between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Chicago (forthcoming, Routledge). De Genova is a timid, quiet speaker, but still an interesting one who encourages discussion. The readings give an excellent background on Latino History, although they are sometimes slightly biased in the leftist direction. Attendance isn`t really necessary for success in the class.

Workload: one midterm (5-7 page essay, graded generously), 10-12 page final paper, no final exam.

I was only 14 when the Communist took over Cuba, but I remember their first priority was to take control of the education system. I think the same was true in Nicaragua.
Kids from age 5 were given wooden guns and taught to hate America. It takes just a few years to indoctrinate a young mind.
From my observation, they worked their way into the US education system in the late 60s, and it has been downhill from then.
Public schools and the University community have become a cesspool of hate America.
It is so sad that parents have yet to see what is happening, and they still send their kids off to these centers of leftist indoctrination.

Good points. Arafat did the same thing on the West Bank. Under his direction, the eductional system put into place a doctrine of hate into the school system, including the textbooks.

The left has been in bed with Muslims for decades--they were in bed with the Nazis in World War II. What many people forget is that Nazism and Fascism are simply forms of socialism. Just tonight on TV I heard Muslim Americans in Detroit decrying the war in Iraq because "Muslims" should not fight other Muslims. This is dangerous thinking. People who put their religion above their country cannot and will not be loyal to America.

And with the public school system, parents must get involved and demand a curriculum and staff that is not a fifth column attack on America.

"I lost all respect for this man as an academic when he said this spring that Jews no longer have any claim to the heritage of the Holocaust because of Israeli policy towards Palestinians. While at first this seems like a personal attack on my part, it is an academic criticism, and here`s why. Professors are responsible for taking ideas and analyzing them, cutting them down to their roots and components, no matter how simple those ideas are at the surface. De Genova does the reverse: he takes the Mideast Conflict, a sophisticated topic by any standards (even those outspoken Palestinian advocates like Professor Massad) and simplifies it by comparing Israeli policy to Nazi policy. Furthermore, he does so despite the fact that he is not an expert in this area, but rather in Latin American studies. In my view, that makes de Genova an irresponsible and unsophisticated academic. I won`t take his classes now, but not because I don`t like him or even because I disagree with him, but because I don`t trust him to give me a complete, fully-analyzed picture of the issues."

Excellent point. Some other college is having it's federal tax dollars audited and threatened by Congress because a teacher is teaching a porn class with pictures of children's privates. Maybe Congress should take up Columbia's federal funding.
